I'm trying to upgrade a friend's PC to SP1.
We can connect to MSN [dial up], and browse the internet.
When trying to install SP1 from an official Microsoft IE6 SP1 disk [which I have successfully used on an XP Pr PCo and 2000

Pro PC], the following error message appears:
"The software you are installing has not passed windows logo test to verify its compatibility with windows xp".
I have tried to follow the steps in Ming Sumarli's thread of 04 Mar 2003.

Steps taken thus far.  [Reboot & re-attempted upgrade after each step]  :
1. boot to safe mode; ran SP1 upgrade from CD;

2. clean booted [unchecked everything in system services & startup group];

3. sfc /purgecache  ; then sfc /scannow  ;

4. verified that cryptographic serice is starting;

5. renamed catroot2 in C:\windows\system32  ;

6. using regsvr32, I registered the following files:
inseng.dll
oleaut32.dll
ole32.dll
urlmon.dll
mssip32.dll
licdll.dll
regwizc.dll

7. I exported, then deleted the following keys:
HKCU\software\microsoft\active setup
HKCU\software\microsoft\Internet Explorer
HKCU\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\internet settings
HKLM\software\microsoft\active setup
HKLM\software\microsoft\internet explorer
HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\internet settings

8. I verified that the ProgramFilesDir & ProgramFilesPath registry values pointed to the correct location
HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion

9. No network drives were mapped.

10. reviewed KB 303399; it does not pertain to XP  .

11. cleared the folders:  "windows\temp" & "windows\temporary internet files"

Windows XP Home, first edition.    There are some hot fixes in "add/remove programs" with SP1 notation, but system info

[msinfo32] does not report SP1 for Windows xp.

I tried that, too.
The step to change IsInstalled from "1" to "0" is accomplished by deleting:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\   , which I did, step 7, above.

Thanks for your efforts.

I have resolved the issue, with the assistance of Microsoft tech support.  The first guy told me I would have to re-install Windows XP home ontop of itself.  It is so easy to tell people to re-install the OS.

I called back, spoke with a much more professional tech [still front level], who listened to my concerns.  AND, he fixed the problem.

Steps to resolve:
1. verify "cryptographic services" had started;
2. verified date/time to be accurate;
3. renamed catroot2 in c:\windows\system32
4. registered more files
Wintrust.dll
Initpki.dll
Dssenh.dll
Rsaenh.dll
Gpkcsp.dll
Sccbase.dll
Slbcsp.dll
Cryptdlg.dll
5. cleared history, temporary internet files, cookies, auto-complete [did not clear passwords since I wasn't sure that I had all of them]; clear SSL State [kb = 290345];
verified SSL 2.0 & SSL 3.0 in IE's options/ advanced were selected; verified firewalls were disabled; disabled AV software;

Looks clear enough to PAQ refund.  Waiving the standard notification, but experts please post any comments to dispute this action - virtually anything can be undone.
