loading .3ds model in Java 3D

I'm looking to make a packman type Java 3D applet and was wondering how to go about loading a 3d Studio Max model into the universe

Try nehe.gamedev.net or www.gametutorials.com - there are examples of how to load 3ds models with C++.  Java supports classes and pointers doesn't it?  If not, at least you'll get a feel for the logic, and sometimes if you really hunt you can find the tutorials ported to other languages.
