I just want to know how can I retrieve information such as the name of the primary video adapter, and any other hardware like this. (there aren't any API, are there?)

you might want to check out a win32 function EnumDisplayDevices

see info at msdn:

Yep, thank you. :)
Don't you know how to detect any other device such as sound card, or hard disk or whatever? (maybe a clue?)

Ok I don't know any APIs for arbitrary device info but you can get the information from the registry

have a look at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet

This has information on where to find things (hardware) in your registry for win 98/ME
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=298837

The key above was for 2000/XP but i'm sure you can draw your own parallels.

Just in case you don't know how to access the registry programmatically:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/sysinfo/base/registry.asp

of course if you only want to know about your sound card check out these functions:
waveOutGetDevCaps
waveInGetDevCaps
auxGetDevCaps
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/multimed/wave_0z39.asp

I also found this about device management (seems there is an API) but its complex
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/devio/base/device_management.asp
