Exchange 5.5 Internet Mail Service Issue

Here is my environment, Windows 2000 Server, sp 3, Exchange 5.5 sp 4.  I was running the IMS with no problem until my server froze the other day, since then I cannot get the IMS service to start, I have reapplied the service pack (4) and I have deleted the IMS connector and tried to readd it, but when it tries to start the service, ti gives me the error that the service could not be started.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Can you be a bit more specific with the error?

ASKER

When I try to start the service manually, I receive this error.

could not start the microsoft exchange internet mail service service on local computer
error 1067: The process terminated unexpectedly.

When I go to the event viewer I receive this error, it will state that the service has tried to start (x) amount of times then gives this event ID 7031

I've got a similar situation at the moment.

I have a W2K member server SP4 with Exchange 5.5 SP4.

DNS seems OK as Internet access is fine and I can 'NSLOOKUP' anything on my network.

Basically, the IMS will start for a few seconds and then stop. When I got to the system log I see the 7031 error as above. Sometimes it will go days before doing this again.

I've re-applied the relevant service packs and checked for viruses without any luck.

However, I've also noticved a few other strange things. Terminal Services refuses to install and the entries in the Event Log disappear...???

Any ideas......
Exactly the same issue here.

Windows 2000 Advanced Server Sp4
Exchange 5.5 SP4

I tried to repair the windows install.
I re-installed SP4 on windows and exchange.
I am typing this on the system now. (internet connection is fine)

I have had the exact same problem recently.  I am using Trendmicro's ScanMail for Exchange 5.5 and when I turn off the ScanMail services, the Internet Mail Services seem to start and stay on.  I've had ScanMail running for a couple of years without any problems, so I'm not sure if this is the solution, but at least it's a starting point.  Is anyone else having this problem using this or Antivirus software?
Jack,

have you found a resolution to your problem? We are having the same issues except that IMC will not start after we stop ScanMail Services....

Thanks,

R
Actually, I haven't found the problem.  I set the IMS service to automatically restart if the service terminated.  My event log shows multiple stops and restarts, but it would stay up long enough (sometimes for a few hours) for mail to deliver.  After about two weeks of constant stops and restarts the problem stopped by itself.  The service hasn't stopped for about three weeks now.  Sorry I couldn't give the answer you need, but I'm still puzzled too.

Here is another possible solution, but it will involve a call to Microsoft.  If anyone tries this, let us know if it works.
