What is a simple signal mechanism from Client to Server

I am developing a server application on Windows 2000 server, which uses FTP to download files (test results) from test stations running Windows 2000. The reason I wanted the Server to pull the file is because then the work station would not have to be automated to upload the file. I also understood it would be better security. The problem is that I do not want to disturb the work station while it is busy collecting data, because I am afraid of contention/timing problems. All I can think of right now is to have the work station send the server an email message, but there probably is a much better way. Hopefully it would be a very simple signal mechanism for the work station. Pardon my ignorance and thanks.

How ever you are going to do this will require you to install something on the workstation.  You could install iis/ or personal iis on each workstation.  You then write a simple asp page that responds if it is ready to be polled.  This would be a great way since you do not have to do anything to the workstations buy have microsoft code on them.

Well since i do not know how to tell when one of you test workstation is ready to send data, i can only give you the answer that i think you need.

But lets say that you are running some sort of test that generates a file when it is done.  Make the asp page check for that file.
Then when the server calls that paticular machine it will see a page that says true or false.
Then the server would know to pull the file down.

<% code to see if the page is there or not %><%=result%>
