how do I pass information to javascript from perl without a refresh?

I'm designing a chat room in perl without refresh.
I've seen it done before and I know it's possible.
I want to know how to pass information from perl to javascript
without using a refresh on the screen.
from Javascript I'll rewrite the <span id="whatever"></span>
areas in the other html documents in a multiframe page.
I'm using a javascript settimeout function in order to loop the javascript
on the submit message frame. (not that the frame should matter but whatever)
I think there might be a way of loading information from a perl script by
using a SRC="whatever" part of say an img or something in html
and then pass that info into javascript.

If anyone can help me out with the javascript end of this, I would greatly appreciate it.

btw - I am using a 204 response method over html instead of 200 to stop the refresh when I run
perl scripts.  So I don't think I can view any html from those scripts per say.
I believe I took a wrong turn on using that path.  I think I might have to do something in
html or javascript to send the information back without a refresh.
Although the 204 code works great for just running a perl script to pass from javascript to perl
without refresh.

Basically time to go backwards with var pass.

Much Appreciation to anyone who helps me out.

short answer: impossible

long answer:
do you mean that your javascript runs in the client (browser), while perl is executed on the server?
  then see short answer

BTW, impossible means: without refresh (according your question)

You're right.. the only way I could find a way around this was to make a java applet as the input frame.. thanx anyways.. I'm always trying to do the impossible.. and I always find a way around the situation..

once again.. thank you.
