When list changed trigger

I have a poplist with 3 values: external, internal, private.
Depending on which value i select, certain other items become visible
(only the items that are necessary for this type of project).

From the moment i select one, the items must become visible.
This works fine for all the values except for the first one. If i select external, which is placed first in the list, nothing happens.
I guess it's because i use a when list changed trigger and the first record doesn't change.
What do i have to do?

I think you will have to set the other items to match the default (first) value even before the list is changed - e.g. in WHEN-NEW-RECORD-INSTANCE trigger.
