On startup hold down the C key on the keyboard to boot from the CD-ROM.  Also make sure that there is a Hard Drive in the G3.

Check the cables inside the G3 to ensure that the CD-ROM drive is hooked up correctly to the motherboard.

Good luck!

According to Apple, you must boot from the original system disk, and either select your hard disk from the Startup Disk control panel or reinstall your system software.
Which operating system are you trying to boot ?
Is this a system restore disk or an original OS install disk ?

When you hold down C and powerup does the machine look as if its reading from the CD ?
If holding C during startup will not work, you can try resetting the PRAM. Sometimes this will scare Macs into submission. Press and hold Command+Option+P+R immediately after power on. Keep pressing until you have heard three startup chimes. Retry starting with "C" pressed.

Find someone to open the machine and listen to the HD.  See if it is actually spinning up.

Try looking closely at the power supply.  I have a mac on my desk for refurbishment that supplies power to the mobo but won't supply power through it's single power connector.  The fan won't run either.

You may not be happy if it is the powersupply due to the fact that they are hugely proprietary and from mac to mac they are also proprietary.

Anyway, not booting could be the result of alot of things including OS related issues.  Try posing the question in the mac forum here.
