I cannot find a program under linux that will break down an mpeg movie into frames of jpeg files.
The last knowm program to be able to do this is MPEG-1.2.2-6.i386.rpm

This is however not usuable for mpeg2 movies.
My sony DSC505V camera stores all its movies as mpeg, but I want to be able to get each individual frame as jpeg.

Any idea of a good program (preferably command line, but gui also ok.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/dumpmpeg doesn't help then (should have the same limitations, unfortunately).

And you didn't find anything useful at http://mjpeg.sourceforge.net/ or http://heroinewarrior.com/cinelerra.php3 ?

Cinelera is a nice program and i tried it before.
It steps all the frames but do not dump them as a stack of jpegs which is what is needed. i need to have the mpeg dumped in order that I can process each frame with the gimp.
I will look at dumpmpeg.

Hm, I thought you might be able to transcode it to something more useful, and then go to jpeg files... with something like lavtrans.
I wouldn't get my hopes up for dumpmpeg.

I believe that Transcode or mencoder that comes with mplayer should do the trick.

Dumpmpeg did not do the trick, lavtrans only accept avi's and other formats. I dont think that the image will be preserved well going from mpeg to avi. It is important to go straight from mpeg to jpeg and not via avi.

It might be ok if the images are dumped as pnm or pgm as I know how good they are. So a MPEG to pnm dump will be in order, but not movie-to-movie conversion.

I will try mplayer.
All I want is just to dump my mpeg movies taken with my Sony DSC505V to pnm/png/fits or jpeg.As straight as possible.

kreg,

Aaahh!
I played with some of the support programs of mplayer and it dumped the whole MPEG movie into PNG's.
I think that is a good enough start.
PNG is about halfway between GIF and JPEG.
So for images PNG will be almost as good as JPEG but better than GIF, while for text it would be better than JPEG but worse than GIF.

Anyway, this solved my problem 95% and you can have the points as I must be honest mplayer solved other outstanding issues as well.

If you however DO know, what the command would be to convert straight into JPEG let me know.

mplayer is one HUMUNGUS program. Solved lots of my other problems too.

Thanks

there is a switch to do this but it is no quite clear.
default is PNG.
However, you get your points, but final help would be appreciated.

If all else fails you can use the convert program to convert from PNG to JPG. Convert comes with Imagemagik package.

Nope, conversion from MPEG to JPEG has almost no quality loss. Converting to PNG already loses image quality.
convert is nice but it cannot fix the damage png did to graphic quality.
Anyway, thanks for the help.
I will dig and see.

kreg,
for you information, the magic command was

mplayer -vo jpeg  mov00001.mpg

which then dumps directly to jpeg files.

Long live command line.

So that completes it thanks.
