Newbie needs help

I just found this site and first off, I'd like to say that I think it's awesome here!!! There are so many people answering everyones questions and really fast also!

OK, I hope someone can answer my question.
I'm upgrading an older computer (kids gaming computer) from win95 to win98.
The computer is an Aptiva IBM. The operating system (win95)was installed using a clean install from a recovery disk. (fdisk and format first, then used the recovery disk that was included with the computer. It's full version 95)

Now, I don't want to do a full clean install again as there are way too many games as well as the internet suff and files on here. I'd really prefer to just throw my win98 CD into the cdrom and install 98 over 95.

Any precautions i should take?
I've made copies of important files and the like, but (here's one question) how can I keep a copy of all my kids emails? I already exported the address book and the bookmarks to floppy, can I do the same with the important emails that they don't want to lose?

Any problems with what I'm about to do?

Thanks for any and all help.

Greetings, Lynn893!
Welcome to the board. You can find the emails at

C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook Express\Mail

The part after Outlook Express may vary depending on your computer. The emails are .dbx files.

You should create an emergency boot disk. In case something goes wrong with the install you can boot to DOS. From Control Panel select Add/Remove Programs > Startup Disk. Put a clean floppy disk in the floppy drive and click Create. This will put some systems files and your CD drive in the disk.

You are ready to go.

Best wishes, war1

Hi War1! Thanks for the welcome and the speedy response.

I looked under c:\windows\application data\microsoft\ and do not have outlook listed there. I do have \addresses and \internet explorer there though. Anywhere else to look to find where my emails are stored?

Found it War1. It in Identities, under Application data!
I already have a boot disk with cdrom access that i've used before (so i know it works), any other problems you might forsee me running into?
Lynn893,
Open Outlook Express. Select Tools > Options > Maintenance > Stored Folder. The location is listed there.

War1... already saved addresses and favorites. Found my Identities where you told me to look (Identities not Mail though), and I'm going to do the upgrade in the morning as it is now almost 1 am. Again, wonderful site, thanks for answering my question. How do I award the points? I'm going to click the link and hope they go automatically to you. Hope to see you around tomorrow if I'm having problems (LOL)

Peace.
