public class MyTextField extends JTextField
{
  public MyTextField()
  {
    super() ;
    setOpaque( false ) ;
  }
}

Should do it...

hehe...actually, setOpaque is a public method, so

JTextField f = new JTextField() ;
f.setOpaque( false ) ;

Should work too...
