I have a windows 98 computer that will not boot up completely. Instead I get message a program has performed an illegal operation and the file is WININET.DLL. As far as I'm concerened the system is toast and it's time to run fdisk, and format the HD. However, I can boot to DOS.

My question is can someone recommend a way to copy some of the files on the HD before I format it?

Yeah get another hard drive and install the OS on it. Then put your problem disk back into the system as a slave to the other disk and then copy over what you want after booting up.

Alternatively reinstall Win98 over the top of itself. This will retaing most of your settings and programs but replace the system files.
