ip address disapear , it does not stay
all my computer are win2k and no problem, except this new one , i am configuring all the software and now the ip address i set in , disapear.
when go check in ip configuration it is set at DHCP (like default setting) no more ip address and DNS address.
if i do and ipconfig /all the ip i configure is still there . ?
but if i try to release it it give a message that i dont use DHCP so it can release.
win2k is patch up to SP3.
any ideas ??
thanks

do you use DHCP at all. Wonder what would happen if you set a static ip for this in your DHCP scope

It's got to be keeping the address if it shows it in IPCONFIG--that's why I wondered if there were more than 1 card in this box.

It sounds like you have a driver locked from an upgrade. There are many AMD chipset NICs that have trouble in WIN2K upgrades. Microsoft Knowledge Base outlines the way to fix the problem if that is what you are encountering.
Check this out first:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;247894
I have the specific one on AMD if you need it.

Here is an IBM article that outlines the basics for removing it for their specific computer configuration:
http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=psg1MIGR-4T4223
You don't have to install the "Netfinity Hotplug Services"
Additionally, before you try to install the new driver, you have to delete the three .inf files in the winnt/inf directory that are trying to reinstall the driver. The reason is that those are digitally signed and will automatically take precedence over the unsigned drivers. Additionally, I would manually delete the files referenced in the PCNET registry key...I believe they will have the prefix "pcnt" or "rltk"(depends on your model)...copy them elsewhere just in case you delete the wrong ones.
You should be able to install the drivers with no problem after that. If you continue to have problems, it means you probably haven't found the correct file that controls the DMI layer. Leave a post if you have problems.

ok firts in ibm site, that does not apply, i dont have any PCNET in regedit
In the "regedit" window, in the left pane, double-click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
Double-click System.
Double-click CurrentControlSet.
Double-click Services.
Click PCNET and press the Delete key.
Click Yes at the confirmation prompt
second.... when i install my NIC i specifie the path from the most recent driver, but that does not help
all ip setting disapear when i click OK.
i am at one click to RE-format

Unfortunately, I think reformating will be easier than trying to track down the culprit driver and registry settings. The AMD chipset driver for the NIC is modified depending on the manufacturer.
Make sure you press "F6" and install the drivers from a floppy as part of the boot sequence.
Good luck!

thats what i did, and it work ok now, you know one thing i forget to tell you, when they give me this computer the IntelExpress was defect it had an exclamation on it. so i think that maybe that mess up the installation and some registry.
that is the only good reason i can find for this king of problem.
thanks anyway vivekpara and others for your help ;-)
