I have a text field in which all the data begins with a "|" .  For example, instead of "Sample", it says "|Sample".  I need to create a field to remove the "|".  How can I do this?

Go to Edit>Find/Replace. Itll let you globally find and replace |Sample with Sample.

I have 6000 different names so I do not know how to globally do this since they are all different.

That works but I do not wanted to set fields to do it automatically on import.  I have figured it out by using this formula:

If(Left(f4Company, 1) = "|", If(Left(f4Company, 2) = "| ", Middle(f4Company, 3, Length(f4Company)), Middle(f4Company, 2, Length(f4Company))), If(Middle(f4Company, 2, 1) = "|", Middle(f4Company, 4, Length(f4Company)), Middle(f4Company, 3, Length(f4Company))))

As you can see the character is not always in the same place.  Now I am trying to figure out how to remove a quotation mark.  It will not let me find and replace it with a space.

If you do a find for "|" in all fields and all records, and dont put anything in the replace field itll just remove them. Same should apply for quotation marks.

Many sugestions, starting with using the "Case" function instead of the "If" function.  <grin>  The "If" function is old technology, and is simply a residual from when Filemaker was a flat file database. If you are doing an import, you should have created an import script, such that all fixes can be done via that script.  As for your quotation mark issue, FM uses the quotation mark for many internal uses within the application itself, so you can do searches on it directly etc.  To get around most of the problems related to quotation marks, simply create a global field called "Quotation Mark" or something like that, type a quotstion mark into it, and then you can use that field in your calculations, etc.

I use case most of the time but because I was thinking this out on paper, I ended up using the IF/Then Statements.  I am not familar with Global fields so I will have to research that further.  Thanks for your suggestions.
