MAC <-> PC Home Networking: How To?

I have a MAC and a PC at home.  Currently, I use a 56K modem via a phone line to access the internet on my PC, but recently had the local cable company install broadband? dsl? cable internet access on my MAC.  I am currently renting a modem through them but want to buy my own AND network my PC with the MAC so I can get rid of the second phone line, slow modem, and Earthlink as my ISP.

I've been doing some looking and have found the same modem that I'm renting but don't know what else is needed for networking.  Some type of router I guess and ??

Just wondering if you can give me some suggestions on what to do and what equipment to buy.

Thank you so very much.

You can do it 2 ways.

1) The BEST way is to get a cheap router ($49) and ethernet all your machines to it. The Mac will communicate with the PC out of the box and if you turn on windows filesharing on the Mac the PC will be able to connect to it as well.

2) You can turn on Internet Connection Sharing on the Mac and use it as a software router. The problem with this is that if you turn off the Mac or it goes to sleep, the PC wont have net access.
