I have an IDE hard drive (A Fujitsu M1623TAU, 1.70GB, 3298 cyc, 16 h, 63 s) and it was running fine until this morning. When I turn the machine on now it seems to spin up for a second or so and then it spins back down. Because of the spin down, the BIOS doesn't detect it. Any ideas?

check the cables (both ribbon and power)
slave it to another machine, and see if you can get it to spin up
and then get the diagnostics program and run it. the drive may be toast

Question about that though... I have already tried the cables, and a couple other machines prior to asking.... Wouldn't the diagnostics program be useless if the machine can't see the drive?

Yes, the comment was predicated on getting the drive to spin up. If it won't spin up, it is a paper weight

I hope there wasn't important data on the drive, or at least you had it backed up :~)
