VB6 - MSFlegrid Control and Win 2K/XP Installs

The problem all started with a customer running Win 2000 SP3 where he was unable to install one of my programs which uses the msflexgrid control. He was able to install the other programs with just the standard windows controls. I ran into the same problem in Windows XP Pro. The problem was Setup kept going into an endless loop saying windows needs to update system files, as if VB6 runtime files weren't present at all. **I've installed VB6 SP4 and recreated the setup package and it seems to work now. **My question is have I really solved the problem or have I missed anything? Will I have any problems now with 98 or ME users?

You have solved problems for yourself. I would advise you to install SP5. There were lot of issues with PWD that were solved in SP4 and SP5.

If you are using database then I would advise you to download MDAC 2.7 Refresh from Microsoft's site and distribute it along with your application.

In case of Windows98, just check the version and if it is the first version then install DCOM98 before installing your application. Similarly in Win95 install DCOM95 before installing anything.

Not using a database in this app, grid gets populated from an imported ascii file. DCom98 is only needed for database apps right?

No. There were problems in Win98 version 1st version related to DLL hell. DCOM98 is required with most of the applications that are being installed on Win98 1st version. In 2nd version DCOM98 comes installed from Microsoft. So its better installing DCOM98 on 1st version. On the other hand, I have hardly seen using that version anymore as they either upgraded it to 2nd version or solved the problem through service Packs, otherwise its next to impossible working with that version.
