i'd like to add http://www.webstandards.org to the list, but maybe look at that when you know a bit more about HTML.
For an actual paper book, you can't go past O'Reilly - they do some of the best technical books around. Their old HTML4.0 book was fantastic, but I'm sure it's been updated since then.

check out http://24hourhtmlcafe.com/ and http://www.webdesignref.com/ . "html complete" published by BPB publications is one of the best books in indian market.

Well, I aint too interested in online references. I prefer the old style. The book called "HTML - The Complete Reference" is an excellent purchase. My favourite.
