Can't convert .wav to .mp3

I've got a couple of .wav files that I recorded using my microphone.  I want to convert these to mp3's so I can listen to them on my pocketpc without taking up much space.  One of the wav's is almost a half hour long.

I've tried re-recording the .wav's with different quality settings, but I can't get them to convert to MP3's.

I've tried using Cool MP3 Wav converter, Roxio's easy cd creator, and also musicmatch.
Cool MP3 just creates a few seconds of loud shreaking noise.  Roxio just doesn't do anything when I hit the record button to convert the files.  Musicmatch says the files are incompatible.

Any suggestions?

actually, I fixed it by downloading Roxio's latest patch.  The surprising thing was that converting my low-quality wav file to an MP3 almost doubled the file size!  From around 15MB to 28MB  So I'm sticking with the .wav file for now.

What kind of setting didi you use for your Wavefile? You have to use specific settings, so that the mp3 encoder will be able to convert a wav file.

Wave-file is not always wave-file...
