I want to put a shortcut on my desktop to run the 'Send Console Message' program from

Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Action -> All Tasks -> Send Console Message...

What file should I use as the target file? Thanks.

Hello I DON'T know if you can do that since Computer Management is part of the MMC...  The action to Send Console message is just a component of the Computer Management console "plug-in."

But what I DO know may help you instead.

Where I manage the computers at work I've set everyone up to us RealPopup.  It's a "Free Winpopup Replacement"

Nice icons, simplistic functionality...  Everything an administrator would want the user to have and (thankfully) nothing more.

Anyway, I don't know how many computers you have, but if you have a lot you can perform a login script to install it on all the comps...
It's at:

Try "Net SEND computername "TEXT" " from the command prompt.

Alternatively try "NET SEND /users" to send to all users on the server.

Or "NET HELP SEND" to display all the available options

I have programmed a small utility that does exactly what you want.  You modify the ini file by adding your list of users.  Keep the "all users" if you want, to send a popup to all logged on user.
Unfortunately, the software does not recognize weather the user is logged on or not but it still works...
Send me an email and I'll send it to you... Or if there is another way of posting files ?!?

Cynicszm, I thought about including that in my first message, but since he's wanting to use the interface, I'm thinking he wants the not-so-tech (or non-admin) to be able to use it to communicate back and forth...

I don't like users messing with the "black" console screen, I know their not

From what you're saying Opusss, that rules out your util as well...  Since you have do edit an INI to change to which user a message will send to.

RealPopup can take over the messenger service if you want, or stand alone...

I'd like to see your util though Opusss.

Put it up on FTP somewhere :)

Anyway "Annu" tell us what you're wanting to do that for and maybe we can better help you.

"Application" is always a good way to help get a point across when asking computer questions!

The ini changes are done by the admin and only once.  This ini only sets a list in a drop down menu in the interface.
Everything is user friendly.
I'll try to find a FTP somewhere and I'll re-post.

Thanks all.

I want users to have an easy way to start the message sender. They should not have to do complicated tasks and I don't really want to install a special program to do this. It would be a great help too if they could CHOOSE which computer name(s) to send the message to, instead of having to type in the computer name(s).

The users just need to be able to send casual messages to each other.

Thanks.

Thanks all.

I found realpopup had the right balance of features and ease of use/installing.
