I recently added another 512MB RAM (PC2100 DDR 266 DIMM), for a total of 1GB RAM (2 x 512 DIMMs). XP is generally stable most of the time, but it restarts sometimes on it's own. I had this problem with another Gigabyte board but worse (would not even get to logon screen, just restarted in a loop). Since the board change to a GA-8LD533 Intel 845GL chipset Intel P4 1.6 GHz CPU(Gigabyte), XP has been more stable, but still restarts on occasion. I removed one of the DIMMs now, because the system would restart every time I tried to go to my on-line banking website (go figure ??). I have all the XP patches and IE patches available ... I've tried new drivers for video and audio with no luck ... any help on how to stabilize XP on my system with 1GB RAM??

Thanks

Since it seeme to be stable with just the one RAM module this suggests that the other module may be defective or the slot it sits in isn't making solid contact with the module.

CrazyOne,

I had a certified tech test the board (that is why I got a new one) and the memory DIMMs both tested. My BIOS is at the latest version (F2) from Gigabyte. The BIOS is upto date and see the whole 1GB with no errors. One observation in XP (under control panel-system-general tab) with 1GB memory installed ... the dialog reports .99 total RAM ???)

I've only been able to recreate the restart using IE and linking to my banking website...

Thanks,
DMAD.

I will reinstall the other 512 and try what you suggest. Keep in mind that I have experienced restarts outside of IE6 ... I just ran into an IE6 instance where it causes a restart ... however I don't suspect this is the root cause, it just may be the website content that triggers the restart... maybe. I will let you know once I through your suggestion.

Thanks again,

CrazyOne,

I tried the first command line and received an error "Error loading Setupebv.dll, command could not be found" ...?

Syntax error or do I need to specify a path for the setupwbv.dll file? or leave no spaces between setupwbv.dll,IE6 ...?

Thanks,
DMAD.

CrazyOne!

I reinstalled IE6 from the inf folder (right click install), rebooted and I can now go to my banking website without a restart. I will have to award partial points for resolving this instance of my problem.

Thanks!!
DMAD.

P.S. I will award all points if you can tell me how to remove some spyware "broderbund DSS agent"? When I shutdown ... XP cannot end this program :o(

Thanks again!

Thanks CrazyOne!

F.Y.I. I believe I resolved my problem and have determined that my video may be the cause. I changed my color resolution from 32 bit highest to 16 bit and XP no longer restarts at that website and it has not restarted since ... will keep my RAM upto 1GB for now to see if it happens else where.

I will be spending some time on this video problem ... running Intel 82845G graphics controller.
