MS-Office, IE crashes when remote printer is off

It seems that Win2000 checking remote printer is on the net before print. The problem is that if remote printer is off, ms-office,IE or whatevr apps that tries to print crashes. I even cannot see preview screen.

I never had such a problem with win98. How can I avoid this problem. Please advise.

Do you have all the service packs and updates installed?  How is this printer setup, to print by ip?  Need a lot more detail to assist.

I would try installing both the Office and Win2k Service packs. The application should not freeze, it should indicate the printer is offline or unavailable.
