I'm running WU FTP as my FTP Server software since it's what came with the OS and it's only a local network and I'm using Webmin to administer the server. Now what I wan't to be able to do is unlock people from being locked into their home directory so they can browse the whole filesystem and perform administrative tasks if needed. How do I do that?

You can do this if they all login as root. First you have to remove the user root from /etc/ftpusers.

Hi!

That's just a very bad idea.
Don't let root use FTP.

Instead install openssh and let people who need to do admin tasks login as root through SSH only.

Also if a user whould only be able to administer Apache, give that right through webmin, since webmin is running as root it's allowed to do whatever it wants.

I tried logging in as root and that didn't work. SSH is installed and working but I want the user to be able to upload and delete files real easily anywhere on the computer and ftp is the best way to go for that. Originally WU-FTP was locking the user in their home directory and they couldn't get out. I was messing with it for a while and all of a sudden their not locked in their home directory. They just need to be able to delete and upload stuff in directories like /var /etc and stuff like that.

ftp is NOT the way to go on this...ftp = username/password in clear text, among other issues.

SSH for access to the box, and SCP (secure copy) or sftp (secure ftp) for file transfer.

If you want them to access the filesystem you will need to change the permissions on that user.
