asked on

WSCUpdateProvider could not be located in the dynamic link library WS2_32.dll.

can anyone please help, when i log on i keep getting a message box, with a big x to the left and the message saying"the procedure entry point WSCUpdateProvider could not be located in the dynamic link library WS_dll." how do i sort this problem and remove it from the screen?

I can remove it temporarily by ending the process but a different .exe process occurs after each startup. I'm not sure whether it is a trojan, virus, adware etc.

Would you please tell us which operating system you use?

WS2_32.dll is used for winsock connections. The message "entry point could not be located" means that the calling application tried to call a function that is not available in this version of WS2_32.dll.

There are 3 things that could cause this:
1. You've installed an application that was designed to run on another operating system. For example WS2_32.dll on Windows 95 provides other functions than WS2_32.dll on Windows 2000. If an application designed for Windows 95 will use one of these "missing" functions than this error message can occure. To remove this you have to contact the vendor of the application to get a version ready for your operating system.

2. The original WS2_32.dll of your operating system was replaced by an older/outdated version. To fix this re-install the latest service pack.

3. The original WS2_32.dll is up to date and present on your system. But there is another file with the same name stored in a folder which is in the path variable before the original file. To fix this follow the instructions here:

Windows 2000 is only an example but the problem ist not limited to Windows 2000. The same can happen on Windows XP - even if the KB article doesn't tell this.

I am having the same problem.
I am also using XP Home and recently applied one of the security patches (although I cant remeber which one) and this is when it started happening.

I found that the executable are being created in my Profile/Local Setting/Temp directory, I found a different abc1.exe executable file for every time I've started the machine for the past year.  but as I said the have only started causing the error problem since applying the patch.

The Icon for each of these applications was like a swirl, which was the same icon that I found on a "Music Search Online" that I came across on the net and have been finding in weird places ever since.

I hope this information can help you find some kind of solution.

Have a look at the download page from Microsoft. There was an artikle in the knowledge base, that one of the security patch destroys the Windows Update service, this seems to be the service which WSCUpdateProvider points to.

A second path is available which replaces this wrong patch.

Download the latest Update Service (must be arround May 2003) from the download site or

Update your system usinf the Update Webpage, not the updater which is part of XP. This problem affects WXP as well as W2K
