try
linux single[enter] at almost any linux loader
if using grub press 'e' to get the grub shell and then type linux single

what it does is boot linux as normal but when it loads init, which loads all other things and manages users, it boots to single user mode and the single user is root and from there use `passwd root` and type the password
MKrauss

boot linux from another boot dev like with
www.knoppix.org then edit /etc/shadow and reset
the root password by using a known shadow string,
this i made successfull a few times .....

lucassinker I'll rephrase the question "I want to know my friends password" heheheheh.

Anyway best way to recover u r password is login in single mode and then change it from there.

If u are with a root permissions remove the password hash in the shadow file.
maxchow

restart the computer
at the lilo
put in:

linux single

then when at the prompt #

type:

passwd

then you can able to change the password again.
