networking windows 98/2000/xp
i have 3 computers, all use static LAN IPs. i need them to be able to see eachother under the same workgroup and share files/folders/printers.

the machines are: windows 98, windows 2000 professional, and windows xp professional.

which services/protocols need to be installed, and what settings do they need?

thank you!

also, since the w98 box will be the lowest common denominator, make sure all machine names are 15 characters or less, contain no spaces or special characters

You must check their Network Configuration.

These must be present to all PC's:

1. Client for Microsoft Network
2. TCP/IP
3. NetBEUI (needed in pinging specified computer using its PC name instead of IP address)
4. File and Print Sharing must be enabled
5. Under Network Identification, they must have different name with the same workgroup

For the Properties of TCP/IP:
1. They must be assigned with an IP Address of 192.168.0.1 for PC1, 192.168.0.2 for PC2 and 192.168.0.3 for PC3
2. They must have the same Subnet Mask which is 255.255.255.0

Some reminders for file and print sharing:
1. In windows 98 and XP, you can just automatically share files/folder by setting it as shared as (any name)
2. In windows 2000 pro, you must set that as shared to everyone or you can simply add the user account of the log-in account that is being used to log to other computers.

GOODLUCK!

Not true, in fact NetBEUI is a different protocol from tcp.NetBEUI has nothing to do with pinging, pinging is only with tcp. perhaps you meant NetBIOS over tcp?

loyaliser, you can use default settings.
Just set unique computer name, same group name and allow user Guest on w2k/XP (for access it from w98).

Additionaly I advise same OS on all 3 computers

Glad to help

The Windows operating systems have distinct methodologies for designing and implementing networks, and have specific systems to accomplish various networking processes, such as Exchange for email, Sharepoint for shared files and programs, and IIS for delivery of web pages. Microsoft also produces server technologies for networked database use, security and virtualization.
