Linksys wireless router and adapter problems

I had road runner (my first mistake) install a linksys wireless router for us a few days ago.  For some reason, it won't let me connect to gaming servers, or use a program called HLSW which sorts multiple servers and gives the ability to ping them.  It will only ping the first server i click on, nothing else.  When I try to join game servers (specifically counter-strike), i get an "Error! server verification failed" every single time and it won't let me connect.  That used to happen occassionaly, however no matter what it happens every time now.   I've gone into the router configuration and absolutely nothing is blocked.  I contacted road runner and they have no idea why it might be doing this.  Also, every minute or so the connection timeouts on the computer hooked up to the NIC .  I checked with some other people and they said that it was the 2.6 version of the adapter and that I should get the 2.5.  I tried downloading the newest drivers to see if that would remedy the situation, but the setup files don't work.  How might I go about fixing all this?

have you tried bypassing the router and plugging your PC directly into the ethernet port on the broadband box? (to see if the router itself is the problem or if it's something with your service)

well the router acts as a modem and router, so the other pc is directly plugged into it and still has the same problems.  and i'd think if it were a problem with the service road runner would be able to tell something.

also, maybe something related is that when using IRC, I can't send out requests to send a file or chat, they can only do it to me.  and on AIM i cannot retrieve a list of someones files to get from them.  so possibly something is blocking outbound which wouldn't make much sense since nothing is showing to be blocked.
ah.. ok.. it's the new cable modem with the 4 port hub and wireless access point all built into one?
a nice unit but it makes troubleshooting a bit more difficult..

Have you tried setting up your computer as the DMZ host for the router?

how can i set that up?
go into the router setup where you looked for blocked ports before and look for the Advanced tab..
that will switch the whole set of tabs at the top and one should say DMZ host

It will only give you the option to change one number.. set that to the last number of the IP address of your PC and then all unknown traffic will be sent to the computer you specified..
it makes it look like your computer is on the internet in place of the router..
use this for diagnostic purposes.. if it works then the problem is in the router configuration..
if it doesn't help then it's an issue with your service..
after you've tested this you will probably want to return the value of the DMZ host to 0.. it basically removes any protection that the Linksys firewall would provide to your computer..

Two things you can try. I have one of these same routers.
1. update the firmware on the router to 1.44x - the 1.42 code that ships with it is really buggy.
2. Adjust the MTU size down to 1492 (on the Advanced tab near the bottom)

well road runner wouldn't tell me what they changed the router configuration password to so i'm waiting for them to call me back tomorrow.  how do i update the firmware?
well if it's like the other linksys boxes, holding in the reset button for (I think) 5 seconds will reset the box to default settings, including the password.. then again, if the roadrunner guys had to change something to make it work then you might break your connection..
More than likely they locked you down....Get your money back and go for a linksys WAP, and follow the easy instructions. Would make your life easier....

I figured out the problem, and would like a refund.  It ended up being that port forwarding had to be enabled on certain ports, and road runner doesn't allow me to access the router configuration so they have to do it themselves.
