Socket Error 10049

Windows2000 PC Client Machines access the Internet via a Wingate 4 Proxy Server running on NT4 SP6.  Lately these 2 clients have been getting a lot of "Socket Error 10049" messages when using the proxy as a gateway, but would connect to sites effectively when 'bypassing' the proxy by changing their settings to "Auto Detect" instead of "Proxy Server" in the Connection setup screen.  Please note that this have only been happening for the last 3 weeks or so and seems to become more and more of a problem (happens more frequently).  I have done online scans using Trend's online scan, but didn't find any viruses...

Any idea's please??

Hello,

From all the details, on the web about this error, it seems to me that somehow this error normally happens when Windows is not able to assign the requested address or it normally results from an attempt to create a socket with an address not on the host machine.

In Windows 9x this error was related to the fact that such machines had some or the other kinds of Trojans or viruses. For some reason I believe that the same maybe said for Windows NT4.0/Windows 2000 Machine. The resolution fo this would be to do a thorough Virus/Trojan/ Spyware Scan. It maybe possible that your Winsock.dll was corrupted or over written with something else.
You can try the 'Cleaner'(trial version or otherwise) from www.moosoft.com

I dont know if you can download the winsock.dll to sove this problem. But I surely would suggest you initiate thorough Virus/Trojan/ Spyware Scan and take steps for their removal if any.

Hope this helps.
helo i know this problem and fixing it. Ok run portscaning method to find a problem and then changing outgoing on port. If a problem for only "3 weeks" also check outside for weather efecting data cable or also rats sometime have eat my cable on a network.

Hi there Arjun1,

When running Cleaner, it stops @ the pagefile and suggests that the file is locked by the Windows OS.  It further suggests that Anti-Virus software should be stopped while doing the scan.  In my case, no anti-virus software is active while doing the scan, but Cleaner still halts @ this file during the scan.  How can I get Cleaner to complete the scan (or 'un-lock' pagefile.sys)
Hello,

I searched more for this type of error popping up on the computer. It still suggests the sanme thing. I think that you can actually bypass the pagefile sys because this error crops up from somewhere else within the Operating system and as mentioned in the following Website it maybe due to some P2P program that has been installed on the system surreptiously or otherwise.

Hello
An interesting  update

"Norton, antitrojan, the cleanner.... doesn't find anything, the solution was McAfee".
The fact that there is something in your computer is highly probably. you mentioned rthat it started within the last 3 weeks suggests that indeed some thing has gotten into the Computer. The only question is to find out what. Check the details, dates etc of all the new files that has been changed within last 3 weeks. I know it is a PIA but you gotta do it.
