Serial ATA RAID0 and Ghost Image

ASUS P4G8X Deluxe
P4 3.06
2 Gig RAM
Raedeon AIW 9700 Pro
SB Audigy 2 Platinum
Dual 120 Gig Seagate Serial ATA Drives
Sony DRU500Ax DVD Burner
20.5" Dell LCD Monitor
Windows XP Professional

I have spent alot of time and a considerable amount of money putting this system together and would like to have a disk image to restore a fresh clean xp install with all Updates, Drivers, System Tweaks, personal configurations and settings.

The RAID0 setup is on a sil3112 SATA chip on the MB and I can't seem to get Norton Ghost (Included with systemworks 2003) to recognize the "drive" on re-boot to make an image. I know that RAID is not officially supported by ghost, but I have also heard that it is possible. On my first attempt at ghosting the drive my computer went into a "boot loop of death." Every reboot froze at the same point before even getting completely out of POST.

Ghost is / was my method of choice because I'm backing-up to the DVD burner.

1.) Is it possible to get a ghost image with this sil3112 RAID0 setup?
2.) If not ghost, how can this be done?

Hi
I dont know if Ghost is compatable with RAID0 setup..........................BUT
Two other thing'as you can do......

1). set up system restore check points!. If you goto start/help and support and then click system restore you can set a point (a mark) for XP to save, then if you want to go back then you can.

2). Install XP on top again, and simply uninstall XP if things go wrong, and then you'll have the perfect copy underneth, jthen one you see now.

just thought of 1 more, why not get another HDD and copy your comp onto this new one, and take it out and hide it for future needs.

"I know that RAID is not officially supported by ghost, but I have also heard that it is possible"

Some people get lucky; the trick is the RAID controller's level of sophistication.  Typically the motherboard built in type are not workable with Ghost as these are the most simple.  I suspect Ghost is not the tool for your particular system because of this.
There is another disk unitlity like ghost that does support raid, but I can not remember the name.  LOL
Acronis true image supports Volumes. http://www.acronis.com/products/trueimage/...

Thanks.
I also lost ALL data on my SATA RAID drives.
If this happens again, I have found a way to recover your data - use a boot disk (cd or floppy) such as the norton antivirus one if you have that or systemworks pro and then get it to do a virus check and then you will have the option to boot windows as per normal - do that and you are back in windows.  Finally use system restore to get back to where you wanted to (ie before you tried to image) and then uninstall ghost because it does not work !!!

ps are you sure you can use drive image 7 with sata ??

Does drive image 7 definitely not work with sata software raid such as silicon image 3112 ???
As of today my Comp USA still hadn't recieved thier supply of Drive Image 7 so I haven't been able to verify its compatibility with SATA. All I can really say at this point is that according to the tech I talked to when I called it is SATA compatable... I'll post when I know more.
I have now received emails back from Powerquest (Drive Image) and Acronis (True Image).

Powerquest didn't answer the raid question but said whilst not officially supported many customers had got drive image to work with sata drives.

Acronis didn't answer the sata question but said True Image supported hardware and software raid fully.

Now, if only they could both answer both the questions - raid and sata - is it that hard to read a short email enquiry ??
Hi everyone,

Just letting you know, Ghost 2003 does support Serial ATA if you run the latest Live Update on it.

Alternatively if you use the -FNI switch after the ghost exe command it will force ghost to use the BIOS to gain access to the IDE drive(s).

Good Luck!
I've used Ghost 2003 (fully updated via Liveupdate) and it absolutely will not load (hangs at start screen with hourglass) with my SATA RAID setup. I have a somewhat unusual setup though (2 Raptors in RAID 0 on Highpoint 1640 4 channel SATA RAID PCI card, 2 WD120gb on mobo SATA channels, and 2 Raptors on on-board Silicon Image RAID). However, Acronis true Image Server 7.0 works flawlessly. I've used it to create ~5 images of my OS partition (it can do whole drives too, naturally) and have successfully restored to a 'clean OS' image without problems. I'd definitely recommend it, and I was previously a regular and die-hard Ghost user.

System specs:

PIV2.6|IS7-G|1GbDDR266|R9700Pro|SonicFury5.1|4*36GbRaptor
2*120GbCaviar|Highpoint1640|CRW-F1|GC7000|460w EG465AX-VE(G)
ATC210cAX-1|1451Visionmaster|AltecLansing5100|WinXPSP1|DX9.0b
I can't recommend Acronis True Image 6 or 7.  I've tried them both and I can't rely on them for a business backup solution.  It takes days for Acronis support to get back to me for a step by step solution without any phone support.  Is that a headache you want.  Not me.  Trying another program now.
Just tried Norton Ghost 2003 with the -FNI switch and was able to ghost to my SATA drive (thanks Computone).

Can't help much about the RAID.
According to Maximum PC, patching Ghost 2003 (through Live Update) and/or using the -FNI switch will work with most SATA controllers (like the Silicon Image 3112).  However, if you are lucky enough to have an Intel 865 MB (like I do), the software will not work.  It has issues with the interrupt controller of the 865 chipset.
Drive Image version 7 would not work either (does not support SATA, per tech support).
The did get Drive Image 2002 to work without incident.

For more info, check pages 65 & 68 Maximum PC, MAY 2004.
I bought Drive Image 7 which also comes with Drive Image 2002 and used it on my SATA drive and didn't encounter any problems.  To bad PowerQuest was bought by Symantec (which produces Norton Ghost).  I hope Symantec doesn't mess up a good product.  I didn't use it on my RAID drive but I may in the future.  Looks like image software is very dependent on the hard drive controller / software / BIOS and what it can recognize and or is wrote for / updated too.
I have used Drive Image 7.0 to image my primary 160 Gig SATA RAID (0) from an Intel 875PBZ to a 120 Gig slave IDE and it worked fine.  But, when I tryed to recreat it by booting off the Drive image CD the Raid Drive wasn't recognized to restore, and only gave me the option to restore to the 120 slave.  I hope that True Image can accomplish this small feet.  There is got to be a way to automate the the RAID driver instal before drive image initializes.  I think I'll try to setup a virtual OS boot using RAM.
I got the same problem with an ASUS P4C-800E. I use an Intel SATA RAID controller as RAID1 and could not clone the RAID to a single hard disk. As I use this PC as a server I like to have a copy of the raid on a separate hard disk in case the win 2000 server crashed.

I do the same with other servers which have a PROMISE PCI TX2 raid controller and never encountered a problem. I even restored servers this ways. I used Ghost 7.5.

As I partitioned my hard disk into "system" and "data" partitions I could copy the system partition with a Partition to Partition copy (10GB) but when I try to do the same with the data partition (60GB) Ghost freezes.

Well at last I got at least a copy of the system.

The funny thing is that originally I copy successfully the server from a single IDE hard disk onto this Intel RAID without a problem. I just doesn’t work the other way round :(
Ghost compatibility with Intel 865 chipsets and Serial ATA drives

Situation:
This document describes what you need to do to get Ghost to work with your Intel 865-based motherboard and Serial ATA drive controller.

Solution:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Before you begin: If you are using Norton Ghost 2003, the latest LiveUpdate includes the fix for this issue. To run LiveUpdate for Ghost 2003, open the program and then click LiveUpdate.

If you have a licensed copy of Symantec Ghost 7.5, contact the Symantec Customer Center at (800) 927-4017 to obtain information on an updated file that fixes this problem. The Customer Center will confirm your serial number for your copy of Symantec Ghost 7.5.

To contact the Symantec Customer Service Center in Europe, Middle East, and Africa, read the document Enterprise Customer Service Contact Information in Europe.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ghost is compatible with the new Serial ATA (SATA) standard.

If you are experiencing problems like Ghost hanging, locking up, or freezing when loading or while "initializing TCP/IP" once Ghost loads, the problem lies with the interrupt handling for the Intel 865 Chipsets and later. Upgrading to the latest version of Norton Ghost 2003 or Symantec Ghost 8.0 resolves the problem. Also, see the Technical Information section below for information about an update to Symantec Ghost 7.5.

Workaround
Depending upon the mix of SATA and IDE drives installed to your system, one of the following switches should resolve the problem:
If you have an IDE and an SATA drive, or only IDE drives:
-FNI Forces Ghost to use the BIOS to gain access to the IDE drive.
If you have an SATA drive and no IDE drives:
-NOIDE Disables access to IDE devices.
Hi Guys!

I could fix the problem!

Use Ghost Enterprise version 8.0 and enable under the SATA raid controller option in the BIOS "P-ATA & S-ATA". This way Ghost 8.0 does not hang anymore on startup. I am just copying between the normal ATA and SATA Raid system. I hope it goes through till the end. Thanks "dhupp" for your advise. I tried the switches but Ghost woulf still hang.

Regards,
            Mark.
You can also use PowerQuest DriveImage 7.01 or later.
I could not get Ghost 2003 to backup my Raid 0  Sata C: partition on a Asus A8N motherboard running the onboard Nvidia raid. The OS I was trying to backup is WindowsXP 64. Nothing worked until I used the "-FNI" in the advanced command line option in GHost. I now have a useable snapshot of my drive after loading the main programs and personal files.  Thanks for the tip.
Great Job abatis! thanks for the update
