I Want to Kill ShopNav
I have tried adaware and SpyBot...but still ShopNav infects my system.  If I type an invalid URL - I am taken to shopnav.  And it also seems that my presumed suffix - call it boo.com - no longer works in the browser.  So I can't just type in http://host for my internal hosts - I am forced to type in http://host.boo.com.  If I ping host without boo.com whacked on - that works fine.  It's in the browser that the domain/suffix are screwed.  Help!

Removal
Open the registry (click 'Start', choose 'Run', and type 'regedit'), and find the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. In the list of values on the right, delete the 'srng' entry.

Next, open a DOS command prompt window (from Start->Programs->Accessories) and enter the following commands, for the IE variant:

cd "%WinDir%\System"
regsvr32 /u "\Program Files\Srng\SearchHook.dll"
regsvr32 /u "\Program Files\Srng\IEHelper.dll"
Or for the SN variant:

cd "%WinDir%\System"
regsvr32 /u "\Program Files\Srng\SNHelper.dll"
Restart the machine and you should be able to delete the 'Srng' folder inside the Program Files folder. You can also open the registry (Start->Run->regedit) and delete key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Srng, and delete the 'words.lst' file in the Windows folder to clean up if you like.

Finally, restore the normal search settings (Internet Options->Programs->Reset Web Settings).

Links

if in ad-remove programs, delete NavShop ...

delete the physical NavShop files on the hard drive by navigating to the l;ocation in Windows Explorer ...

change start page to what u want it to be in options/prefs ...

run a disk utility that repairs registry items (like Ontrack System Suite 4 is what i use) ...

repair registry (the registry software will scan registry and remove registry entries that correspond to deleted items) ...

goto START BUTTON>RUN>MSCONFIG ... disable any services or startup items that refer to NavShop or other apps you DONT user or NEED ...

reboot

if its still there or wont delete an entry OR delete an in-use file, make sure you end task in task manager, or reboot to DOS and manually remove them.

also might help to go to google.com and research NavShop.

good luck

Actually this part I noticed is wrong

cd "%WinDir%\System"
regsvr32 /u "\Program Files\Srng\SearchHook.dll"
regsvr32 /u "\Program Files\Srng\IEHelper.dll"
Or for the SN variant:

cd "%WinDir%\System"
regsvr32 /u "\Program Files\Srng\SNHelper.dll"

just do this instead from Start > Run cmd

regsvr32 /u "\Program Files\Srng\SearchHook.dll"
regsvr32 /u "\Program Files\Srng\IEHelper.dll"
regsvr32 /u "\Program Files\Srng\SNHelper.dll"

Well I tried...

regsvr32 /u "\Program Files\Srng\SearchHook.dll"
regsvr32 /u "\Program Files\Srng\IEHelper.dll"
regsvr32 /u "\Program Files\Srng\SNHelper.dll"

and then I rebooted.  The last one regsvr32 /u "\Program Files\Srng\SNHelper.dll" - appeared to complete okay but the other two had some issue.  Anyhow - I rebooted and shopnav was still going.  So...I tried drcspyisafag's suggestion

"one thing u may want to do id in you internet explorer options/settings, amke sure you disable 3rd party or browser extensions/add-ons/objects and install-on-demand "....and that did the trick!!  I appreciate both your help - but I think drcspyisafag gets the points on this one.  Any dispute?

glad it worked out for ya =)

sramesh2k - I downloaded adaware, scanned and had it remove all that it found.  But still shopnav was not removed.  Perhaps if I had done the webupdate you mention that would have done the trick.  But the other answer from the Dr. fixed the issue.  I can now just put in my host names again!  Wahoo!

Microsoft Windows XP is the sixth release of the NT series of operating systems, and was the first to be marketed in a variety of editions: XP Home and XP Professional, designed for business and power users. The advanced features in XP Professional are generally disabled in Home Edition, but are there and can be activated. There were two 64-bit editions, an embedded edition and a tablet edition.
