Error: "The display control panel is unable to change the display settings. Please check your display hardware in device manager."

Whenever I try to update or modify my display settings I am given the above mentioned error message.  I only noticed it yesterday, but am not sure when the error began occurring.  I thought the problem may have been with my video card (NVidia GeForce 2 MX400) so I installed updated drivers, but that only created further problems with the display that I could not correct.  Being unable to undo any changes I made, I have since restored my registry from five days ago.  I have checked the hardware profile in the device manager and it shows no obvious problems, except for maybe an IRQ conflict with one other device. Both are requesting IRQ 9, but I didn't think that should be a problem... Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Well lets make sure the system files are ok

Description of the System File Checker Tool (Sfc.exe)

How about your monitor can it handle the changes you are trying to apply?
Team_4R,

Have your system scan for viruses which might reside in your system causing it to act strangely,

Try performing a virus scan on your pc.

Log on to internet, connect to url:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

Choose your country as stated and your pc will be prompt to download the necessary tools (there'll be a prompt for u to click on "yes") for your pc to start virus scanning.

By the way, what Operating system are u using? Windows 95/98/2000/Xp?

Greetings, Team_4R!
It could be that the updated drivers are not for you video card. Your existing video card driver may have gotten corrupted. Do you have the existing driver for you video card?  If you do, boot to Safe Mode. Delete the display driver from either the Add/Remove Programs or from Device Manager. Reboot the computer and let Windows reinstall the driver.  Have your driver disk handy.

Best wishes, war1
Simply follow me

1. Goto Command Prompt
2. Change your current directory to C:\WINDOWS\INF\OTHER
3. Find your display adapter name there and delete the INF file like "sis6326~1.inf"
4. Restart your computer.
5. Thanking You :)

Thanking You

Mimicsu's link to the Microsoft sites solved the problem immediately. Just turn off netscape and life becomes easy.... who would've thought? Anyway, the issue is now gone, and all of your help is very appreciated... Thanks again.
