Windows cannot find start.exe
Every time I try to double click on my C drive in the My Computer Window, I get the following error:

Windows cannot find start.exe.

This program is needed for opening files of the type 'File'.

However, I can right-click on the C drive and select 'Open' and that works fine. I have searched my hard drive for start.exe, but it could not be found. I have tried re-installing XP, but to no avail. Any suggestions? Is start.exe a real Windows program?

Edit the registry to set the value data for the Default string value in the
registry keys:

Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).
Locate and then click the Default value under the following keys in the
registry:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell

Click Modify on the Edit menu.
Type none in the Value data box, and then click OK.
Quit Registry Editor.

If the registry value is all right and if the problem continues, this may be due to the presence of the file called Autorun.inf in the C:\ drive root.

Locate this file and delete it.

Thanks for responding. I checked the registry, and it already had the value 'none' for that key. There was, however, an Autorun.inf file in the drive root, but deleting it did not correct the problem.

Open up regedit on your machine and go to the key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell\open\command. ย Check that the key showing is as below :

%SystemRoot%\Explorer.exe /idlist,%I,%L

If it is not as above, change it and reboot the PC to see if the my computer icon works properly now.

I think you may have a virus, Do you have any antivirus software ?.

Download the DRIVE registry fix from here:

http://www.geocities.com/duey99_2000/regdrive.html

Save the contents to a .reg file (say 1.reg) and double-click it.

Microsoft Windows XP is the sixth release of the NT series of operating systems, and was the first to be marketed in a variety of editions: XP Home and XP Professional, designed for business and power users. The advanced features in XP Professional are generally disabled in Home Edition, but are there and can be activated. There were two 64-bit editions, an embedded edition and a tablet edition.
