windows 2000 login password deleted? No option for administrator login!! pl help.

Hi friends,

Firstly thanks for helping me out of my personnal laptop win Xp re-installation problem. My laptop is working perfect now.

Iam asking ur kind help in another matter. Pl read this...

I have upgraded one of my friends laptop from windows 98 to windows 2000 professional pack. As such my upgrade was successfull. Before starting the computer after complete installation, system prompted for entering login name and password to get into windows 2000.
pl note There were no options to login as administrator. So i generated a password to login. I tested all other software programs after upgradation and everything was perfect.

My friend dont want system to ask for login at every start up. To do this i went into control panel/user account and deleted the newly created user login name and password accidently without knowing that i logged in as the same name that i deleted.
After this without thinking i restarted the system and as usual it asked me for login name and pwd.

Now since i deleted my last login and pwd i cant login at all. Nor there is an option to enter as an administrator?
I tried to start windows in safe mode but there too it is asking for login name ?
There is absolutely no option to login as administrator which is quite strange to me.
I have also tried just entering "Administrator" OR "Guest" as login name and a BLANK.... password. but didn't helped.

Will any one please tell me how to solve this problem ?

Strange that Win2k allowed you to delete Administrator account - I have a difficult time believing that it would.  But, since I am unwilling to test it on my own win2k machine, I'll take your word for it.

Before trying PeteLong's DOS-floppy password cracks, try this:

At boot, hold down F8 key until you get prompted to select boot option and select
"Last Known Good Configuration"
Which may or may not restore admin account info.

Then try PeteLong's cracks OR

Just re-install win2k over itself.  This will re-install all the system files, preserve your app installations, and restore built-in accounts - including admin.

If you re-install the OS you'll need to re-apply all Service Packs & other updates from MS.

Thanks petelong and japman,

I do remember my password but the problem is i deleted it when i was logged on with the same one and then re-started laptop.

listen let me go step by step.

1. I logged on with newly created login name and password without any problem.

2. Then i went into control panel/user settings, just to try something so that system dont ask for login name at every startup.  and in the event i deleted the new user name that i created.

3. But before that i did found two other user names  viz Administrator and Guest  along with the third one that i cerated.
So even if i deleted the new one i still think it is possible to login as guest or admin. but system wont let me login with any one of those names.

My querry is if i logged in with bootable floppy disk do i have right to again create a new login name and password ?

If NOT then the only way to go with is petelong's suggestion's.  Re-installation of w2k is not possible bcoz the CD i have is not self installable. It has got several different softwares and thus even first time when i used it to install w2k i run setup.exe file .

I am also confused in creating bootable floppy. The words image writer, mirror's, SCSI drivers, Rawwriter confused me ?
will you please explain step wise how to use one of those ways to create bootable disk ??

Thanks again.

I guess it wasn't administrator account.

The laptop initially had win98 operating system and was not asking for any login name at startup.

When i upgraded to win 2000 it prompted that win2000 needs login name to enter  into the windows. and it also gave me suggested name as "New User".  I used the same name and created a password and then easily entered into windows without any problem.

After that i deleted the "New user" account and NOT the administrator or Guest account, which i saw in "User Accounts" inside control panel. At the time of deletion i even thought that i can still login as an guest or admin.

So i dont know why it was showing me three accounts in User Accounts window. (Admin, Guest, and New user)
if the new user account that i created is assumed to be the admin one then what are those two remaining accounts for ??
and how come i didnot see any option during startup for Admin login ??

since i dont have w2k self installable disk,  is there any ways to open the disk and re-run setup.exe to re-install w2k again ?

please suggest.

Since you cannot get into the system, your best bet is to reinstall Windows 2000 from scratch.  Upgrading Windows 98 to 2000 can get messy and I personally do not recommend it but that's just me.  During the installation, there is an option to have a user log on automatically on boot up so that would solve the other problem.  This would definitely be faster than waiting for an answer here but if you are reading this, then you have probably spent too much time and should go ahead and reinstall windows. I doubt if you need help with this but in case you do, please check out my website at http://home.hot.rr.com/tminerd.

HEY ALL MY FRIENDS !!!

I SOLVED THE PROBLEM !!!!   OFCOURSE WITH ALL UR GREAT SUGGESTIONS AND GREAT HELP BY PETELONG.

I reffered the JOHN SIMPSON'S NOTES ON CHANGING DOMAIN ADMINISTRATOR PASSWORD.

I JUST FOLLOWED AS HE SUGGESTED AS I DIDNOT NEED ANY BOOTABLE DISK TO DO THAT.

AND FINALLY GAINED ACCESS TO ADMINISTRATOR ACCOUNT. THUS CHANGED PASSWORD !!!

I still dont know what was the problem but i managed to slove it somehow.

Now at startup it  ask for login name which is "ADMINISTRATOR" AND ofcourse the new password set.

(comment on "turbo76542" suggestion:-  I have successfully managed to upgrade windows 98 to windows 2000 without any mess!  This all happened after installation.)

Any ways thanks to petelong again,

.... and also to japman & turbo76542 for ur help.

have you fixed your problem of auto login? you can do this by going to the control panel, going to users, and unchecking the box that says "users have to enter a password to log on"
