you could do a CTRL+PAGE DOWN and CTRL+PAGE UP to get it to show

tried it here with a downloaded document and it only showed aprox xxxxx characters and after doing the above my page 8/8 showed up

To view page numbers, switch to print layout view. To edit page numbers, you need to display the header or footer that contains the page numbers.

On the View menu, click Header and Footer.

If you positioned the page numbers at the bottom of the page, click Switch Between Header and Footer  on the Header and Footer toolbar.

If you inserted page numbers by using the Page Numbers command on the Insert menu, each page number is enclosed in a frame. To edit a page number inside a frame, click the page number.
A cross-hatched frame border appears around the page number.

Select and modify the page number as usual.

Tip   You can include additional text or graphics along with the page number, such as "Page 1" or "- 1 -". For example, to create a page number such as "Page 1," click before the existing page number, type Page and then type a space.

Hi,
Sorry for the delay to respond. None of the above answers didn't help me so far.  I saw the problem only for the attachment i get through mails.

What happens if you:

--first save the file to the hard drive and open it?
--open the attachment, and then hit View-Print layout?

If someone sends you a document that was saved in normal view, you will not see the page numbers...
pceasy has already explained this.

think it has to do with some timing, when opening documents in an attachment word is used by outlook and the document is opened in a sort of temp outlook folder since this document wasn't saved yet on the pc it doesn't disply a page count since font type etc are variable it can count approx xxxx words after selecting to the end or selecting all of the document word can determine the approx page count because it has a copy in memory of the document and show if you save the document this is buried somewhere and can be retreived when opening from disk [no clue how it works precisely]

have you tried to select to the end of such an attache document and see if it displays the page count? with my document it did and that's what i used to pen up my comment just curious to see if that works for you too since you didn't comment on it

nabeel: you are not fair to pceasy.

You stated "none of the above answers worked..."

And now you accept one of those answers?
AND, you give a B grade!

Not very nice...

Sorry , actually i had two kind of problems, one is any word document attachment comes to me , secone one is if i open a new word document still it doesn't show me the page numbers, which i didn't actually mention in  the question. But pceasy's answer was fair to the second one and i couldn't check the first one for any attachment. So i accepted his answer and closed the forum.

NOW, you have said that it helped with a problem YOU DID NOT SAY YOU HAD.
How can you grade a question you did not ask?
