perl mysql filter bad characters

I am creating a message board type script that uses mysql.
I need a filter that takes out the bad characters such as ' (single quotes) etc.
that will mess up the database.
I am looking for one line that does several caracters that does something like:
$linkmessage =~ s/'/\'/g;

but the problem with this is I would have to do it for all characters and it still just inserts the '

$var=~ s/[^a-zA-Z0-9,\.\s]+//gs;

The above will remove everything that isn't a letter, a number, a comma, whitespace, or a period from string. Just keep adding things you want into the character class (the part between the brackets) until you get to the "safe" text you want.
