Computer all of sudden freezes in certain programs. Received a variety error's, but do not know what to do. Please help!

Hello,

All of a sudden, my computer freezes.  Not the blue screen of death, but just freezes or locks up.  First, I received these errors in the event manager under applications:

Received this error under system:

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

So far, I have replaced the hard drive, re formatted the hard drive several times, and uninstalled Zone Alarm, but the issue still exists.  Anybody have any ideas on how I can correct this issue?

Thanks,

The driver disabled the write cache on device \Device\Harddisk1\DR1.

This one may indicate in corect Bios settings or an outdated Driver, go to windows Update and update drivers, also go to the Manufactures website of the MoBo, and look for any bios and driver updates

Do a chkdisk on your drive and look for any errors
are you on NTFS or FAT

Actually this may be entirely NORMAL.  On a W2K or W2K3 SERVER running AD (Active Directory) this is the DEFAULT (and required) behavior.

All the rest of this stuff refers to "TrueVector" which is the engine under ZoneAlarm.  I suspect you have a lame or damaged installation of ZA and should uninstall it and re-install.

Hi,

I have uninstalled the Zone Alarm on both hard drives, but the problem is still there.  I have  an Asus motherboard running NTFS partitions on both hard drives.

Thanks,

CompWorld
run msconfig and see if there is a service or program related to zone alarm that didn't get removed when you uninstalled the application.
Did this happen at all before you installed Zone Alarm after a reformat?

Also if you think the True Vector Service is causing the problem you can go to services.msc, find True Vector Service and set it to disabled.
Ran MSCONFIG, no Truevector service running.  This had happened on my original hard drive, so then I reformatted and after installing all my programs the same thing happened.  It seems that something is preventing XP to write to my hard drive a certain times.  What could this be?  Is there anyway to override this?  Or do I have to wipe the drive and install everything over again w/o trying to install Zone Alarm?  If have never seen something like this before.  Especially happening to my original drive and a brand new out of the box hard drive.

Thanks,

CompWorld
When uninstalling ZA did you just uninstall it, or did you stop it from running first?
If the latter it probably only half uninstalled ZA.

Try here:

I did a search for both of those files, but no dice.  Neither were there.  I had made sure that the service was shut down though.

Thanks anyway though,

jhance is right on his responce about the errors and about Zone Alarm.  If you email them and tell them about your "TrueVector" erros they will email you back with a list of items to hack out of the reg.

This is what I have been able to find out about this problem:

There is nothing wrong with VisualZone. The problem is ZoneAlarm. We have had many reports about this problem since the release of ZoneAlarm version 3. There is a bug in ZoneAlarm that will cause its database to become corrupt. When this happens ZoneAlarm will stop logging information about new intrusions to its log file. This usually happens after you install ZoneAlarm 3 or upgrade to a new release, but it can also happen after you restart your computer. This problem is also mentioned on the ZoneLabs web site. ZoneLabs recommends that you uninstall ZoneAlarm, delete all files in the Internet Logs folder and reinstall ZoneAlarm. But we have been able to narrow it down to one specific file (IAMDB.RDB). Here is an easier way to solve the problem:

1. Shut down ZoneAlarm

2. Open the folder C:\Windows\Internet Logs
(or C:\WinNT\Internet Logs if you're running Windows NT or 2000).

3. Delete the file IAMDB.RDB

If the file BACKUP.RDB exists delete that file as well

4. Restart your computer

5. Start ZoneAlarm (the file IAMDB.RDB will automatically be recreated)
Hi,

Did a search for both of those files, but wasn;t able to find either of them.  Should I try reinstalling ZA Pro 4?

Thanks,

CompWorld
Did you include hidden files in your search?
Yes.  I included the hidden and system files, but it turned up nothing.

Thanks,

CompWorld
If there are no folders or files, that pretty much rules this portion out. Anything in the registry though?
Actually, yes.  There are a few entries for True Vector.  But I cannot delete them.  For som reason, the system will not allow me to delete them.  So, that could be the issue, but I am not sure.  The strange thing is, that I had been using ZA for the last three years, and this is the first time I had ever had a problem.  Do you think that this True Vector is not allowing my hard drive to be writen for certain programs?

Thanks.

CompWorld
According to ZA it may be.

Export those registry entries in case you need them back, then boot to safemode and delete them.
>>But I cannot delete them.

Why not?  Please be SPECIFIC!  What is the error or other issue preventing you from deleting?
I logged into safemode then went into regedit.  Found some of the True Vector entries and then tried to delete them.  When trying to delete them, I received the following message window: Unable to delete all specified values.  It seems like it will not let my system go free.

What do you think?

Thanks,

CompWorld
make sure that something is not left behind in "startup" on msconfig.  If there is then uncheck it and reboot, then export your string for backup reasons.  After that delete them and reboot.  You might have to send a email to ZA so you can get all of the strings, I think that there is 3 or 4 strings but I could be wrong.
Did you right click on the name entry in the right window of the registry editor and then select delete?
Yes, but first do this for a back up.  File>Export>check "EXPORT ALL" down at the bottom, give the file a name and a place to save it and hit save.  After that find the string you want to delete and right click>delete.
Ok, I have reformatted the hard drive, reinstalled XP, and opted for another firewall brand instead of ZA, but the computer still freezes.  What else could it be?

Thanks,

Since it has happened again on a brand new setup, I was thinking it might be the motherboard.  For instance, I had left the computer running for about five hours, and no porblems.  Then ran the a few programs, went on the Internet, no problem.  Installed a few programs, configured a few things and again,  no problem.  I then started one of the programs that had the issues, and it started up fine, but then in the program, the computer freezes.  So, is it more likely the motherboard that is causing the issue?  If it were the power supply, overheating, or memory; why would it wait until that program is executed to freeze?  Wouldn't it happen all the time if it were one of the other problems that you had listed?

Thanks,

CompWorld
Why would that be the motherboard, you might want to think about not installing the program that is causing all your problemsj.  Have you been to Windows update and gotten all your updates, like driver updates?
Yeap.  Got all of the updates.  I just cannot stop using some of these programs.  Two of them are needed, and are very important.  I got this motherboard only a few months ago.  Asus will probably want me to send it to them for repair.  But I will need another one while this one is being fixed or something.  Do I want to spend more money on another board, no not really.  But I do not know what else to do.  I reformated the drive atleast six times in the last week.  Went out and bought another hard drive, and that didn'nt work.  I do not know what else to do.  I am open to ideas, and I hope that there is something else I can do, but I don't know anymore.  I have never experienced this type of problem before.  I have gone through the steps that should of cleared the issue up by now.  So far, nada.

Anybody have have any other ideas that I should try before I shell out money for another board?  Knowing my luck, it will be something else/  But what?

Thanks,

CompWorld
Is anything at all showing in the event logs?

Target just the program that you think is the issue and don't use it and just test the system itself. Load it up by opening several other programs, several instances of IE etc and see what the system does.
The only thing that is displayed, was the following:

The driver disabled the write cache on device \Device\Harddisk1\DR1.

It now froze on Notepad and Excel.  Any idea's?

Thanks,

CompWorld
Hmmm, just a thought, but what driver set are you using for that motherboard, especially the PCI and IDE buses? Are they current? Are there any updates available?
I just flashed my bios, and then the computer locked up.  So, then I removed the CMOS batter to clear that up, and it seems that everything is working... for now.  I just spend about 45 minutes within one of the programs that usually freezes.  So, I guess maybe the bios or CMOS was corrupt or something.

Thanks too all of you that helped me trouble shoot.  I really appreciated it.

No problem. Return here though should the problem reoccur.
Go to the control panel/system/system restore and disable it, next time you run eventvwr you see the results.
