Timestamp and Binary data type

Hi experts:

I have two tables, say "a" and "b". Table "a" is the main table and has a field for timestamp. I am using a ColdFusion script to download the most recent/updated records from the table "a." My objective is to make sure that whenever a new record is added or an existing record is updated, the user should be able to download it. I am using a simple flag to identify a new record, and I am using the timestamp field to check the updates. I am trying to copy timestamp value from table "a" to table "b" as soon as the user completes download. In table "b", I am storing the timestamp value in a field with varbinary datatype. I then compare these two values to check for any updates in the record. I am using a coldfusion script to first get the timestamp value from table "a" and then set it to the field in table "b", but I am getting an error "ByteArray objects cannot be converted to strings."

- Why am I getting this error, and is there a way to fix it?
- Or, is there a better way to address the above?

Thanks
