How do you determine the number of elements in a String[]

How do you determine the number of elements in a String[]? Also, Unlike C++ STL String class, methods for finding strings within other strings and returning indexes into those strings appears to be weak in Java. Am I wrong? How do you scan a string for a substring and return the index of that sub string?
