RH Linux 7.0 how to upgrade kernel to 2.4.18 and downgrade gcc to 2.95.3?

I have installed RH Linux 7.0 on my machine. I need the kernel 2.4.18. So I got 2.4.18 linux kernel source from kernel.org.
I learnt that gcc 2.96 is not good, so I got gcc-2.95.3 rpm and installed it and some gcc-c++ 2.95.3, cpp-2.95.3 libstdc++-2.95.3 libraries.

I compiled the kernel and rebooted.

But now my applications don't compile. They give problems with <time.h> or <sys/time.h> etc. However on the non-upgraded RH linux everything compiles fine. I am sure I messed up something when upgrading the kernel or downgrading the gcc.

Please help.
