Word cannot find the spelling file msspell3.dll or mssp232.dll for .

My spell checker in MS Word 2000 or MS Word XP is not working with the following error:

Word cannot find the spelling file msspell3.dll or mssp232.dll for .

I have removed MS Office XP using the MS Office XP uninstall through Add/Remove, then checked the registry for MS Office entries as per the MS Knowldege base, then deleted the Microsoft Office folder and all subfolders.

Rebooted - then reinstalled MS Office XP.  Same error.

I then again removed MS Office XP using the MS Office XP uninstall through Add/Remove, then checked the registry for MS Office entries as per the MS Knowldege base, then deleted the Microsoft Office folder and all subfolders.

Rebooted - this time I installed MS Office 2000.  Same error.

Interesting thing is - the entire time, when doing a spell check through MS Outlook 2000 - it checks the spelling ok.

When doing a spell check in MS Word 2000 or MS Word XP the spell check randomly gives me:

Word cannot find the spelling file msspell3.dll or mssp232.dll for .

Or it tells me the spelling check is complete, even while misspelled words remain.

This had almost been a disaster for me due to the fact that I'm sending out resumes with cover letters.

My system is running XP Pro SP1

Some of your text is in an unspecified language (the language name is supposed to appear in the message after the word "for" and there's nothing there). Select all your text and use Tools / Language / Set Language, choose what language the text is in.

Well, looking back - i continued to have intermittant problems with the spell check in Word.  I think I inherited a new laptop and gave up on the old one.  So if anyone is still having problems after reading this posting - your not crazy.

Sean
I just ran into this problem on a specific document. I was less than eager to try the more drastic solutions mentioned and tripped across a very simple solution. Here's what I did:

Open the document
Select All
Select Tools --> Language --> Set Language
Highlight English (U.S.)  (It was no longer highlighted)
Verify the two check boxes are unchecked
Hit OK

Worked for me. Good luck.
I also had the same problem on a computer running Word 2000.  I was working on a document and the red lines that would come underneath a mis-spelled word would dissapear after saving the document a few times.  I used the above process for language restting and the spell checking started to function correctly.  Grammar worked the entire time, btw.

I also go this message in addition to the topic;
Word cannot find the grammar file msgr??32.dll for .
