windows will not boot after latest automatic update

Hi there

I was working on a friend’s pc that was running windows 2000. He works from home and hasn't got broadband. So I took it into work and used the automatic update to get the latest fixes. When I was asked to reboot I did so and it just went to a blank screen. It would not boot under safe start either. So I thought that it was my fault for not updating the antivirus software first.

So the following day I did an automatic update on my own pc. And knowing that my own antivirus was up to date thought nothing of it. But I got the same result. The only difference is that I get the windows logo up on the screen and it dies then.

My machine is a dell and his is a gateway. Both are running sp4.

Any help would be appreciated.
