Fixed MBR with FIXMBR now can't access drive to retrieve files HELP!!!!

Here's my question, I have a hard drive that I was using as a external (firewire) on Windows XP SP1. I had fragmented files on it so I decided to defragment it. When I did that it stopped 3/4 the way into the process and I had to restart (system hung). When I restarted I thought that there might be problems with the drive so I decided to run the scan disk utility. When I restarted it ran the scan disk utility and stopped responding and I had to restart. When I restarted I could no longer access the drive saying that there was a problem with the MBR. I then ran recovery console and used the FIXMBR fixing the MBR. Now I can't access the drive because every time I click on the drive it says "The drive is not formatted Do you want to format it now". I know that if I do this I will not be able to recovery any of the data on this drive that I need and I would like to know is there a way to fix this problem so I can recover my files. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

Alright thanks for the help but, what program would you reccommend or have heard of the best results. I really don't want to try a program that might curupt the data and then find out it's really not a very stable program. The drive that I'm using is a Western Digital 120mb 8mb cache and is only 2 years old. It is highly unlikely that the drive is failing but I will still transfer all the data over once I get some feedback on some of these programs.
I've used ontrack with good success, though others in this forum have reported good results from PC Inspector and GetDataBack. They're all non-detructive and most of the commercial products allow you to view what they've found before you pay for the unlocking code.
Thanks again for all your help. I will look into a couple of the programs that you suggested. Another program I was told about was File Scanvenger V2, have you heard anything on this program? A friend told me about this one and he said he likes it because it will also find all the directory folders (paths) as well, not just the file.

Chicagoan I gave you the points because I got the followup responses I needed to the question. Thanks for the help =)
thanks... now go back that thing up!
