If your keyboard is not too old with windows key (it's mean windows icon key on keyboard)

(windows key + m) you are able to minimise all windows to get back to the desktop.

I hope it can help.

(windows key + d) will allow you to toggle between viewing desktop and back to previous view.

Other shortcut keys can be found in under: Start - Help, then under Contents goto Reference - Keyboard Shortcuts.

I know you've chosen the solution, but this may be useful to others anyway.
