Modem suddenly not dialling properly in Win ME

My manufacturer-installed modem (under Win ME) has worked for over two years and suddenly cannot dial out properly. Another (related?) problem has been MS IE freezing after a few minutes when the modem was working and having to constantly reboot the system. Norton did not show any virus, but....

...I re-installed modem software and it worked once, but not thereafter. The PC can 'see'  the modem - modem setting information is produced on request.

hi:

>>Norton did not show any virus...

is that the virus definition up to date?
Try using another modem and see if the problems still occur...

Perform a System Restore

System Restore Utility in Windows Millennium Edition
http://support.microsoft.com/search/preview.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;267951

if still no joy,

Reinstall ME over itself (back up ur data first, just in case...)

-Boot up with the Windows CD or a startup disk http://www.bootdisk.com/
-Type setup or drive:\setup , where drive is your CD-ROM drive
