How do i use 3d game engines?

I am new to this stuff. Can anybody tell me what are some game engines that are either cheap or are freeware?
I also dont exactly know how to use them.

Visit the following web site for a list of 3d engines.

You can also try using the sample programs available with Microsoft Direct X SDK which should give you insights.

I personally suggest you check the following web site :

http://crystal.sourceforge.net/

Crystal SPace is one of the great 3d engines and easier to learn too.

One of my classmates has developed a mod on Half-life Engine. It was quick and painless..

ps: Counter Strike is based on Half Life Engine
