Is there a way, in Windows xp, to manually change the theme using the registry.

Try this to see what it is:
reg query "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\
System" -v "SetVisualStyle"
 
Then use " reg add .....  "  whatever, changing the name to what you want.
