*** Cleanup Volunteers needed (Java)***

Java experts,

At the moment I write this message, we have 3520 open questions in this area and the last ones are from January 2001. So it is high time to close all these old questions.

So we search experts that:
- experts in this area just to be sure you are familiar with the questions you will have to close
- active in the last 3 months - you can be great expert but if in the last 3 months you have at all 10 comments that means you have no time...
- have some time and want to help.

If you fit in the above, please read:

https://www.experts-exchange.com/help/cleanup.jsp

If after reading it, you are still interested in helping please post here and I will assign you a range to work on.
If you have any questions, please ask.

Thank you very much for the help.

Hello AnnieMod I'd like to continue doing some clean up. Last time I left on August 2002 so I can start from there. Let me know if this would be my range or assign a new one for me.
It's always nice to see familiar faces :)

I'll get to work and I'll post when I have something ready :)

Hi AnnieMod,

If you think that I might be useful, I'll give it a go :-)

Having not done this before, I'm not sure how long it will take to go through a "list".  Is this a problem?

  Thanx.

  Jim.
Let's do it ;-)
Hello :-)  Me again :-)

I've done February...took me ages...got loads of work to do atm :-(

But...if you want to allocate me a block, I'll try and get it done before Xmas ;-)

heheheheh

Tim.
Ooooooh!  Task master ;-)

*wanders off singing "The heat is on"...* ;-)
Hi Annie,

I got started, then I got a call to do some work, so I thought I'd better do the job I promised first :-)

I'll come back again when I know I've got some more time.  I'm not sure if I upset CEHJ with some of my decisions.  He doesn't use emoticons, so sometimes it's difficult to tell if he's happy with a decision or whether he's simply "tolerating" it.

See https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/20530210/JAVA-Project-HOW.html to see what I mean.
Right, August 2002 is done. Next are a few left-over questions and then January 2003. You want me to take it from where I left it or assign a new range?
OK Annie,  hit me with the next list ;-)
Since my recommendations seem to be generally acceptable, I'm available to do some more ;-)
;-)
That's me done for a few days I think Annie ;-)

There were some tough ones in there and my brain is beginning to dribble out of my ears :-(

I'll be back for more soon though.  Sadly I'm jobless at the mo', so I'm enjoying being useful :-)
> Please take 27 Feb 2003 - 5  March 2003 including. Thanks

Done! :-)

God, some of them are hard to sort out...

Wandering questions, 20 point questions with 3 useful answers, etc, etc :-(

Anyway, soz it took me a while (work/brain melt/cold and cough), but it's done now ;-)

Can I have some more?

Tim
Cool Jan 2003 it is...  all 250 of them ;-)

I'll start tomorrow...gotta do some work now...

> but sooner or later someone should make the decision on them

True!  And I am not so proud to think I will not make a bad recomendation :-)  At least the people involved can tell me why it was wrong, and make a recomendation themselves :-)

> I hope you are better now.

Still a bit of a cough...  But much better thanks :-)

Tim
Nah...I can handle it ;-)  hee hee :-)

I'll keep you posted on my progress :-)
6th-15th of March is finished... Any new range to assign?
ok :)
Hi Annie

Ok, I've finished January 2003...

Hope they're ok...

Woo...with my new cleanup tool, I can do about 100 questions in 20 mins :-)  Hee hee

(that's not an excuse for you to give me March to August inclusive) ;-)

Still makes my brain hurt...  Trying to work out who deserves 35 points when all of the answers are valid, but slightly different is hard...

Still...it makes people sit up and actually comment on how they want things to go :-)  So it's good :-)

Can I have another block?  I'll start on them next week :-)

Tim
Hi anniemod,

Please let me know on whick block of questions I should work

thanks
sudhakar

> Please take 16-30 April 2003 :) Thanks

Done :-)

Got another block?  I'll start on it tomorrow :-)

Tim
AnnieMod

Hi,

I took up February 2002 range to clean up before.. then had some work to do, therefore didnt go further.

Now I am free... so if you have any range then Ill be able to help.

ps. ooops.. posted in the wrong thread (old one) before :)
Right 1st-15th of April is done.

  Got another range?
Hi Annie,

Can I have some more please ;-) ?
 ok :)
No problem ;-)
It's true it looks much neater now :)

A big "thank you" also goes to you for organizing this effort :)
> Please taake 16-31 May 2003. Thanks

Doone ;-)

That was a horrible block....full of wandering questions ;-)  I was occasionally harsh but fair ;-) hehehe

> I really appreciate it!

As girionis says, thanks for organising us :-)

Can I have another block?  I'm moving house the rest of the week, but I'll get started on it next week :-)

Tim

PS:  How much more is there to clean?  Where do we clean up to?  With jim's latest block, we will be withing 6 months of today! :-)
> With jim's latest block, we will be withing 6 months of today!

Sorry, 5 months! :-)

-- I'm guessing I'm going to get 16th - 31st July 2003 ;-)

hee hee
Hello again. AnnieMod it seems that the range 16-30 June 2003 is being currently done by glottis. You want to assign a new range for me?
 ok :)
It's ok. Probably glottis got confused and continued after his range was finished... It's happened to me in the past too :)
Right 1-15th of August is done. Do you want me to keep on with the rest of August?
Ok I will take February first and then rest of August.
Ehmm.. I just realized that for some weird reason I left out all the questions that were asked on the 15th of March... Do you also want me to do them as well?
First of really really sorry for reply at my earliest, as I was loaded with some office work... so really really sorry.
I must have mistakenly taken the 16th June question. My range is 01-15 June 2003... and I did clean some questions and posted it in the Clean Up area, and are due on 5-Dec-2003:

https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/20810832/Java-Questions-Due-5-Dec-2003.html

By today, max tommorrow, I will clean my entire range and report it here.

Once again sorry for the confusion from my part.
I don't think you need apologise for cleaning more than you should have ;-)

We're gonna have this TA spick and span by Xmas at this rate :-)
AnnieMod

ok got it...
i just another recommendation batch with the old style... the new style will be the way youve told.

Thanks
I am done with August 2003 and the left overs from February (and few on March)... Hit me with the next list :)
Yes I am familiar with JSP, almost half of the Java questions are JSP/Servlet related. You want me to take 17-30 June 2003 or assign a new range under the JSP category?
Looking at the JSP category it is not as bad as Java... It's only got 1060 (at the time of writing) open questions while Java has 2335.
Ok you have a point here... I'll do the rest of June and will let you know when I finish :)
> Please take 16th - 31st July 2003

Done...sorry it took so long...my work load at work has just taken a 400% rise...

Can I have another load please :-)

Woo!

Tim
PS:  girionis, one big push, and we'll both be Xmas Wizards :-) ;-)

Woo!
Tim, we are almost there :)

  AnnieMod

> Can you send me a mail please? Thanks

You mean a proper e-mail or just post here so you will get an e-mail?
>> You mean a proper e-mail or just post here so you will get an e-mail?

"Hmm.  Tricky one this.  So... you want to be a wizard, eh?.  Well then...  Ravenclaw!" - The jimmack sorting hat ;-)
> Would you like to help in JSP also?

Yeah :-)  If I can :-)  I'll do 1-15 sept first :-)  Then I'll have to edit my tool to do JSP TA ;-) hee hee...stoopid hard-coding ;-)

Tim
 *off topic*

Jimmack I am already a wizard in the world of Ultima Online :)))

  */off topic*
> The jimmack sorting hat

Don't we get a song? ;-)  hee hee!

I am already wizard on my company's contact list:

http://bioinformatics.picr.man.ac.uk/contacts.jsp :-)

Tim
 Hehe Tim :)))

AnnieMod I am done with the rest of June. Hit me with the next list.
AnnieMod,

Im left with my last batch of questions... like Tim, work coudlnt be more overloaded :)
trying my best to do ASAP
AnnieMod,

I have recieved some more loads of work... so wont be able to complete my List.
I have tried to all which I could, but there are a still open question in my range (01-15 June 2003)

Thanks.
> Please take 1-15 September 2003. Thanks...

Done!!  Want me to finish off glottis' block?

Between a heavy work load, Xmas rushing towards us, and an impacted wisdom tooth, I'm not sure how much I can do, but I'll get a block finished for sure before Xmas :-)

Tim
>> impacted wisdom tooth

You have my complete sympathy Tim.  I've had 3 Christmas' completely ruined with my teeth (impacted wisdoms and two root canals :-().  I hope you get it sorted OK.
Thanks fella :-)

Eating my antibiotics like a good boy, and I find out on Monday whether my Xrays show a need for patience or surgery :-(

Nothing like having a bloke digging in your mouth with a metal toothpick to put the fear of god into you ;-)

I can see a christmas eve of no drinking, antibiotics, and driving my mates round Windsor to various bars pubs and clubs ;-)

I won't miss the Christmas day hangover though...that's for sure ;-)

Tim
> My dentist always have troubles with me because I always go to see him at the very last moment.

Heheh, that's what I do too ;-)

But I hate the dentist, so why would I go and see him when I feel fine, and ruin an otherwise perfect day? ;-)

Hee hee

Tim
Hiya Annie!!

I'm back!  Hope you had a lovely time over the last 2 weeks, and I hope this new year brings you (and all of us) everything we need or want :-)

Do you have a list of Q's that need cleaning for me?

Lets get this under 1000 open Q's :-)

That would be down from around 4K in only 10 months :-)

Woo!  What an effort!! :-)

Tim
I've got some time if you need a hand.

Annie,

Wish you a Happy New Year.

I have completed may 1-15 range, plz let me know what other ranges i can work on
Annie When I try to submit questions in CleanUp area, I am getting problem saying
"An internal database error has occured!" :(

Since 1 hr I am facing this problem. Please Check if any others facing same problem like me
sudhakar_koundinya: I just had a similar problem submitting a comment on the JSP area.  It seems that my comment was too long.  Try submitting your clean-up list in two halves.
I had that too...but because of my stupid clean-up tool I wrote, I've lost the list of Q's I just cleaned...

Damn...

Time to write something to generate the cleanup list by scraping the web-site ;-)

Hee hee....sigh....

First day back at work....something was bound to get in the way ;-)

Tim
> Bad things always happens in Mondays

Hehe, and late Friday afternoons ;-)

Good luck with CVS!!  It always manages to screw me over too :-(  Bah!

Tim
JimMack's Suggestion worked :-)
Sorry, got called away to dinner by the boss :)
Will post it now.

BTW, what's the procedure when someone compains (repeatedly) anout my recomendations?
Well, I put a comment asking the moderator/admin to make a decision.  girionis just leaves his original recommendation.  I don't like this, because the speed at which the mods/admins actually perform the cleanup implies that they may not be taking too much time to decide whether they need to contradict the CV's recommendation.
Thanks
I generally ignore people's comment on the cleanup, and let someone else sort it out in 7 days ;-)

Hee hee

Lazy Tim
> Anyone would think he needed the points to feed his family
hahaha

 > Not very hard to be guessed. You two are always in kind of troubles :)
even bigger HAHAHAHA

never happened to me, but i would become Lazy glottis too at this time.
if it is small then ok.

be glad to be of help
Just got another complaint :-(
(Guess who)
He's also added (what I believe to be incorrect) comments to a couple of q's after I had made my recomendations.
I'm sure this job was supposed to be easier than this :-)
I apologise to all if this is not the best place to put this, but I think that following the recent comments, it is worth mentioning.

CEHJ seems to be turning into a bit of a bully:

https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/20843613/Help-me-java-problem-one-liner.html#10071237
https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/20839468/calling-method-from-objects-stored-in-arraylists.html

(To name but two recent examples)

I think it might be time for a new EE guideline to prevent this kind of behaviour.  Something that suggests a more measured approach to querying points allocation, especially from newbies.

I also suspect that everyone would experience the same reaction as objects during clean-up.
 <OT>

I seriously suggest that mods give CEHJ 500000 points more so he is ahead of everyone and never complain again... Nah... make it 1000000 because even then I see objects catching up with him pretty quickly.

  </OT>
> Do you want to help with the cleanup in JSP area and leave Java area to the others?

Are the recomendations I am making correct? If so then why am I being effectively punished. Its not like I'm the only person he makes complaints against, he complains about points assignment on a regular basis. I realise there is a bit of a clash between us, and I do my best to bite my tongue most of the time but when he makes a comment that I feel is incorrect then I will provide a correction for the sake of the person asking the question, or if he critisises one of my comments I will defend my comment. I have always attempted to keep my comments on a professional level. If you have any suggestions on how to better handle the situation then I'm happy to hear them.

I understand your reasoning for this, but find it a little unfair. I have no problems ignoring his complaints and letting you worry about it, but if you feel I should pull out of the Java claenup then I understand. I don't feel I'd be that good a judge in the JSP area though so will pass on that option.

:)
> (To name but two recent examples)

One of my personal favourites, not only did he bully the asker into accepting his answer but also implied I was fabricating comments:

https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/20808437/Trying-to-rotate-whole-GUI-contained-in-a-JPanel-by-90-degrees.html
> I am not punishing you - just trying to save to you,CEHJ
> and myself time with not having such issues

I realise that, couldn't think of a better word :)
But according to that approach I should not even involve myself at all in any q's he has commented in.

> Your choice :) Just let me know what is your decision

I'll stick with cleaning up Java area :)

> Sorry that I will say this but you are quarreling like kids:)

What is your advice if a comment is posted (by anyone) that you feel is incorrect?  Should an attempt be made to correct it? Or visa versa, should you defend your comment?

I just need to know how you would like these type of situations handled.

> I hope you read my comment in your CS question and in the connected Java question

I did read your comments, but that was a different q than the one I was referring to above.

> Do not take this seriosly - trying to make a little fun from all this. :)

I take EE seriously with respect to helping other get answers to their q's, I treat the points as a bit of fun and who gets the points is up to the asker as far as I'm concerned.

> OK - is your range done? And if yes - do you like another one?

almost will let u know when it is.
>  I suppose in half of the questions, I'll see the same

Different variations, that one particular annoyed me as the asker got bullied out of their points (they wanted a refund which I thought they deserved) and forced to accept his *I don't know how* answer, and that the credibility of my comments were questioned.

Anyways thanks for the chat, will do my best to keep the tongue in check ;)
> By the way - when you have such troubles - you can mail me also.

There was actually a mod present in that thread so I just assumed that his behaviour was acceptable to EE.

> I suppose you know my mail here at EE.

No I don't have your email.
> let's try to clear the things and do our best we all to work together. OK?

I've been trying for ages, but will persist :)
Back to the more important topic of cleaning up, I'm sure this has been asked before but why can't old q's with no comments be automatically cleaned up?
Maybe 5-10%, not a big issue. Just thought it would be a simply process to delete say any q > 1 month old with no comments. Could even be a regular daily process.
Posting the notice could be part of the automated process.
> For the first question - I agree with CEHJ - other people helped also :)
> for the second - I agree again. Split is the thing that should be done here.

One last comment so I get it off my chest here and not elsewhere.
Typically (perhaps not always) he makes these complaints when his comment was not accepted, often when others have helped but his comment is accepted he says nothing. If his comments are in the name of fairness then he could at least be more consistent.

thanks for putting up with my gripes :)
I'll be quiet again now.
Finished by block (1-10 Oct), am ready for another.

glottis,

I accidently did the first q on the 11th (sorry).
Finished my block of 11-15 october 2003. a little busy so if you have a small block then i can take it.

Now during the cleanup i came across two questions where i didnt comment:

1. https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/20763756/where-should-we-catch-exception-at-the-end-of-a-big-block-or-every-statement.html

CEHJ and sciuriware both answered the question, but i cannot Split the points as it is only worth 25 points.
I like sciuriware's answer as it was more descriptive, however CEHJ's answer was the first one and it did answer the question. sciuriware's answer was just a detail explanation of CEHJ's answer. So i didnt knew what to comment, as i didnt wanted to be anothe CEHJ's Volunteer Victim :)

2. https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/20768023/Who-wants-some-points-major-help-needed.html
AnnieMod this question is under your supervision, as you have given some comments of your own here. Therefore i didnt leave any comments there too.

Other than these two I think my comments were resonable.

Imran
ah what the hell... as long as i get to see the answers for free without even searching.... shoot me the range :)
https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/20767427/Reading-line-from-text-file.html

before the fight breaks out.

Also can you help me by telling me whether my comment was valid or not ?
Annie,

Are you aware of possible timezone gaps that could occur by allocating blocks by date?
https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/20758963/time-date.html

usually dont like stealing points from other... but what can a person (asker) do in this situation.
i DID agree with the recommendation.

ps. i will complete my given list of cleanup in a couple of days.
Hi Annie.  I was just having a nosey about ;-)  Thought I'd take a look to see what the oldest open question was in the Java TA and found a few that had been missed during clean up by the mods.  I started compiling the list to submit, then I think I stumbled across a large block that TimYates had judged, but hadn't been submitted for cleanup.  I guess these are the ones that he lost:

>>  I had that too...but because of my stupid clean-up tool I wrote, I've lost the list of Q's I just cleaned...

Well.  Being the nice chap I am (heehee), I added all of those to the list (except the contentious ones where another expert (or experts) had argued the decision).

I'm just about to post the list on the cleanup TA.  If any of them are repeated, I assume that doesn't really matter (since the question would already be handled) right?

I also just attempted to send an e-mail to the Page Editor in Wireless and WAP to see if clean up is required there too, but I had to guess the e-mail address ;-)  Let me know if you want me to have a go in those areas.

Thanx.
am i the only one using the old classic way of cleaning the Q's ??? or there is a nice tool to work with.
no, I'm also old school :)
> I'm just about to post the list on the cleanup TA.  If any of them are repeated, I assume that doesn't really matter (since the question would already be handled) right?

WOW!  Thanks Jim!  I've just popped on to try and find those, and finish the rest of my list!!

-- sorry I have been really busy for the last 7 days, we had a design change here at work, and I just hd to remove around 40 classes from my web-app, and write about 20 new ones :-(  4 months work down the pan, still I guess now we *know* it's the right way to do things =)

Right...back to my list...should have it done tomorrow :-)

Sorry again for my abscence...

Tim
I've finished my block, ready for another.
AnnieMod i hate to do this but I am unable to finish my block again.
Sorry for the delay as I was really hooked up in my work.

Thanks
Imran
> Do not take this as punishment.

Sorry but it makes me feel that any member can request a CV is removed from duty simply by complaining repeatedly.

> I like your job as a CV

And you have agreed with all of my recomendations.

:-(
Would also like to add that there are often times I could have complained about a cleanup recomendation but don't because its not that important and realise the CV's are doing there best at a sometimes difficult job. Would you prefer if all experts make cleanup complaints whenever they see a recomendation they don't agree with (I wouldn't think so).
Understood, let me know when you want me back :)
I am at the JSP area but lately I can't do as much cleaning up as I used to :(
