I am trying to install on a brand new PC.

I have done all of the (Step 1) prerequisites.

The Setup Failed with an error similar to that described in a knowledge base article #326027.  In fact, the error log showed the same entries:

[10/28/03,10:53:01] setup.exe: [2] ISetupComponent::Pre/Post/Install() failed in ISetupManager::InstallManagerHelper()
[10/28/03,10:53:01] setup.exe: [2] Component error string not specified in ISetupManager::AddToActionResultCollection()

HOWEVER, the Setup log shows a different error return code - 995 in my case.

[10/28/03,09:36:20] Visual Studio .NET Academic 2003 - English: MsiInstallProduct return code: 995.

i've experienced similar problem but i don't remember the error log.
try to exclude the example from installation.
that works fine for me.

sounds great, but I don't quite follow.  What example should I exclude?

Ohhh. i found the error log of my first installation and it is the same error you get!
so exclude the ".Net Framework Example", it should work for you too.

I tried that.  Didn't work.

I also tried not installing the Visual C# and Visual C++ stuff since I am working in Visual Basic.  That gave me the same result. It just happened a lot faster.

I wonder about stripping down more to see if I can narrow in on the offending item?

I restored my PC to birth, then carefully went through the re-installation process.

When I got to installing Visual Studio, I deselected most everything except visual basic.net.

It is happily churning away on DIsk 2, so things are looking up.

Thanks for the suggestion.
