IEEE 1394 Problems…

Since I got a SMART message that my primary hard drive was about to die, I rushed out and bought a new one.  Since it has been 3 years since I did a house cleaning, I decide to do a clean reload.  I have just finished the four-day marathon of loading Windows ME 4.90.3000 and all my software on a Dell Dimension 8100.

NOTE:
1. Dell complete diagnotics run 3 times before reload and after reload (12 hrs each)
2. ALL PCI cards (except Video), Serial/Parallel/USB Cables were disconnected prior to loading Windows ME; after the load they were installed one at a time.
3. ALL software loaded with only Systray and Explorer running.
4. Norton System Works 2003 installed and running Virus Protection, Ghost and Clean Sweep.

THE PROBLEM:
I cannot get the system to recognize the ADS Pyro Drive Kit when it is plugged into the Dual Link 1394 port.  The port works because my Sony DV Camera works just fine when plugged into the same port.  Worse than that, when I plug BOTH the camera and the Drive Kit into the two ports at the same time the system hangs on reboot.

The drive is formated and partitioned into ONE partition and I know the Drive Kit is working because I have an Inspiron 8100 Laptop and it instanly recognizes the drive.

I have tried switching slots and that doesn't work.

I have deleted the card in Device Manager, shut down the system, pulled the card, restarted the system, confirmed device drivers were gone, shut down the system, reinstalled the card, restarted the system, confirmed device drivers were there, still does not recognize the drive.  No "!" marks in Device Manger.

I suspect an IRQ 10 conflict, but none of the devices on IRQ 10 will let me change them.

HEEELLLLLLLLLPPPPPPP!

Thanks
Bob

Probably you have done a couple of Windows Updates and had the latest version of Texas Instruments OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller drivers. Run a Windows update to find out any driver update available for this 1394 controllers first.

The following comes from the ADS website
"My Drive Kit used to work, but now it doesnt. How do I get it back? ? "
  A) Make sure that the drive kit is on before you connect to the PC.
If its still won`t mount, do this "clearance" procedure.
While the drive kit is ON and connected to the PC, turn it off

Wait for 10 seconds, then disconnect the firewire

Apply the power back to the drive kit.

Wait for 10 seconds, and now connect it to the PC.

Remove all the devices, reset the bios and then connect them again.

Questions:

If this computer is networked:  Do you have any mapped network drives, which begin immediately after your physical drive letters?  (i.e. your cd-rom is e:\, and the first network drive is f:\)  If so, please re-map the lowest network drive letter to a higher drive letter.

Also -- Check device manager -> disk drives category.  Are you able to see the hard disk component there?

When the drive worked before, was it plugged into the same port?

Do you have an onboard port you could try?

Did your enclosure come with any alternative power cables?  If so, try these.

somanywindowsquestion:

I have one network drive mapped to "R:"

I have four EIDE disks in system:

EIDE Controller 1
00: Deskstar 80GB, 3 partitions: C:, F:, G:
01: Maxtor  160GB, 3 partitions: D:, H:, I:

EIDE Controller 2
00: DVD:      Samsung SD-612 attached to the Hollywood Plus: K:
01: CDR/W:  Sony CRX160E-DL: L:

So, there's lots os space between L: an R: -- should not be a problem
------------------------------

Device Manager:
I see the 1394 PCI card, but NOT the 1394 drive.
------------------------------

There is no 1394 onboard port in the system.  But I have another 1394 card and it exhibits the same characteristics -- Drives thwe DV Camera just fine, will not drive the 1394 external, when both are plugged in, the system freezes.

I have tried alternate PCI ports with both cards.

What is that is soooooooo different about the enclosure interface/drivers and the DV camera.  I have the latest chipset drivers and latest BIOS update installed
-------------------------------

I have TWO of these enclosures and have switched cables in all combinations.  NONE work.   NOTE that BOTH of these devices appear INSTANTLY on my wife's Dell Inspiron 8100 notebook, when plugged into the onboard 1394 port.
----------------------------------------

I could have bought two new hot systems for the time I have spent on this, but I am determined to solve it.  I just don't know where to go from here..............

Thanks
Bob
