DSL Installation causes system to boot up only in safe mode!

A friend of mine has asked me for help, now, I am asking for help for her.  She hooked up the modem that came from SBC Yahoo DSL, and the two pronged thing(?) and the phone connectors they gave her.  She followed all instructions and the system rebooted to install the software, then it just hung on the installation screen.  She rebooted and now it will only let her come up in safe mode.  She can't even use her cdrom.  She called the tech from SBC and they told her to call HP, which is the system she has, an HP Pavillion with Win98.  I really don't believe it is a problem for HP, has anyone else had this type of problem before?  any ideas?

Any help at all would be appreciated...it is very urgent that she get back online asap so she can continue her work on her group site.  My friend lives very far away, so I can only help her over the phone.

Thank You

Lizd

She tried to remove everything she could while in safe mode, she also had another SBC tech tell her some file was corrupted, and something may be currupt with her hard drive, or system files.  All they did was take her through msconfig and had her uncheck stuff, because they wanted to look smart, but didn't have a clue!  When she would try to boot in normal mode, it would cycle back to the boot menu, and all that would load was safe mode.  I know it was their software that did it, especially after I did a search and found so many who had problems with SBC.

After trying other stuff, I finally had her boot to a command prompt only and do a scanreg /restore, luckily, she had a previous registry backup that she was able to restore to, and then her system was able to finally come back up into normal mode.  Now she is afraid to touch anything, but has to get online.  I know nothing about DSL or SBC, so I am out of my element with this one.  Thanks for your replys, this is the first time I've ever used this site and I really like it.  If she has more trouble, I'll be back!

Thanks Again,

Lizd
